My Take On The Edmonds Interview

Everybody is jumping on the Cardinals organization after Jim Edmond’s termination from the FanDuel Sports Network and his recent radio interview. Most are bashing on the organization for small clips of what he said as if they didn’t listen to the entirety of the interview. I understand that it’s great for traffic and engagement, I am monetized too, so I get it… but the rage baiting journalism is so utterly tiresome.

I have listened to the Jim Edmonds interview on TMA three times now. Yesterday morning, last night, and again this morning.

We all know the organization has issues. The organization knows they have issues, and are working on fixing them and building a better foundation going forward.

I am just not interpreting the interview the way some others are. I feel the longer he talked, the less I sympathized for him and the more I understood why this happened.

He loves the DeWitts, Mo, and especially Oli. So who is the ‘inner circle’ that he is referring too? What other alumni feels shunned by the organization?

He asked when was the last time you saw a HOFer in the dugout and talked about how he loved walking in and seeing Bob Gibson. He obviously wants to be revered like Cardinals royalty has been… the problem is, he isn’t that kind of royalty… and all those HOF faces we saw every spring… Gibson, Red, Lou, Stan… they have unfortunately passed away.

Alumni not feeling welcome makes no sense, when all throughout the organization, there is alumni everywhere. You have to think if somebody isn’t feeling welcome, it’s for other reasons. Off the top of my head, I can name some alumni with jobs in the organization: Stubby Clapp, Daniel Descalso, Skip Schumaker, Jon Jay, Bernard Gilkey, Jason Isringhausen, Randy Flores, Ryan Ludwick, Oliver Marmol, Joe McEwing, Willie McGee, and Yadi has a spot if he chooses to. The only other alumni I have seen be vocal about not feeling welcome, is Vince Coleman… who isn’t a quality person I’d want around either.

He mentioned that Arenado asked if the team could invite Mark McGwire to Spring Training a few years ago and they said no. Would that have been when Turner Ward was taking over as hitting coach? Why would the team want to bring in one of their former hitting coaches to step on his toes? It makes sense to me… its not denying a resource, they didn’t say he couldn’t go work with him on his own time. This is Arenado too, the same guy that begged the team to bring back Matt Carpenter and trade for Tommy Pham because he didn’t want to be a team leader himself.

He was going to quit, before FanDuel called to let him go. So it was mutual.

He complained about every topic that he talked about… the Cardinals, Baseball in general, the league, Ballys/FanDuel, all sports, never really liked being on TV, he criticized reality tv the same way he was talking about working for Ballys/FanDuel, he ripped on the family court system, he ripped on the post-dispatch, and he called people who criticize him “fat people, sitting at home, writing on their blogs… never stepped outside to play sports.”

He obviously is burnt out on life as a whole, sounds like he has a lot going on in his personal life, and is realizing that he is getting older and wants to enjoy life more. But making it like he is a victim to everything, and the sense of entitlement, just reeks of toxic narcissism, and sounds just like my married ex-gf.

You have to think that attitude was noticeable by everybody around him, especially if he talks like that normally to people. I wouldn’t want somebody working for me like that if I were the network, and I would only want quality character people around my team if I was the organization as well.

I hope he finds his peace, but I don’t blame the organization or FanDuel for anything here.
