Center Robbie Avila announced today that he will transfer to Saint Louis University to continue his basketball career. The college basketball sensation played at Indiana State the past two seasons under new Billikens head coach Josh Schertz.
“I think what can get lost in all the hoopla with Robbie is just how elite a player he is,” Schertz said. “The very best thing you can say about a player is that he makes everyone around him better, and Robbie certainly does that. He has the type of skillset, intelligence and unselfishness needed to build an offense around. Robbie also has the competitive spirit and is the kind of teammate and leader you can build a program around. We could not be more excited to have Robbie and the entire Avila family as Billikens.”
A 2024 Lou Henson All-America selection and a first-team All-Missouri Valley Conference choice, Avila averaged 17.4 points, 6.6 rebounds and 4.1 assists for Indiana State last year. He shot 53.6 percent from the field and 39.4 percent from the arc while draining 61 3-pointers.
Avila helped the Sycamores to the 2024 MVC regular-season title and a magical run to the NIT championship game. In two seasons at ISU, he registered 1,007 points across 71 appearances (66 starts).
Avila prepped at Oak Forest High School outside of Chicago. He was rated as the sixth-best player in the state of Illinois out of high school. Avila finished his prep career as the Bengals’ all-time leading scorer.
Avila is the third new Billiken signed by Schertz, joining freshmen Amari McCottry (Milwaukee, Wis.) and Max Pikaar (Leiden, Netherlands).
