The residents near Off Broadway heard some howls erupting from the venue Saturday night as The Yowl had the volume turned up to 11 for their Rock-n-Roll, Babies! record release party. This St. Louis-based punk rock band summons forth the raw, undiluted fervor of past psychedelic, mod, 60s garage rock ’n’ roll legends and bundles it into their own, modern sound. On this night, their fast-paced, high-energy show had the crowd’s rapt attention throughout their full set. They graced fans with songs old and new including “Money, Power, War,” “Quitter,” “I Killed the Sun,” “Lips of the Apocalypse,” “My Baby Does Drugs,” and “Move Fast.”

You just might know music by The Yowl without even knowing. If you’re a fan of either TV show Criminal Minds or Shameless, then you’ve heard at least one of their songs.

St. Louis-based The Hamilton Band opened the night with 40 minutes of a mixture of originals such as “Same Place Again,” and covers including Buddy Holly’s “Not Fade Away” that sounded more in the vein of The Grateful Dead’s version. This group (at least on this night) band states they’re a blues/rock band representing early blues with a twist to their takes on Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, and The Grateful Dead.

This writer’s only wish is that more people had shown up to support these local acts.
