Saint Louis junior forward D.J. Foreman scored a career-high 16 points in a 69-62 win over Richmond in Atlantic 10 Conference men’s basketball action at Chaifetz Arena.
It was the first A-10 win of the season for Saint Louis, which evens its record at 8-8 overall and 1-2 in league play. Richmond dips to 3-12 overall and 1-2 in the league.
Saint Louis played without freshman point guard Jordan Goodwin for the majority of the night. He left the game at the 14:12 mark of the first half with an ankle injury and did not return.
Foreman was 7-of-9 from the field en route to his career-best 16 points. His previous high was 15, scored against Purdue in 2014-15 when he played at Rutgers. Foreman also grabbed five rebounds and matched a season high with two steals.
Davell Roby, who played a full 40 minutes, scored 15 points. Hasahn French was one rebound shy of a double-double, finishing with 14 points and nine rebounds. Javon Bess finished with eight points, nine rebounds and a career-high seven assists.
The Billikens shot 31 percent in the first half but turned it on in the second half, shooting at a 48.3 percent clip while playing with a short bench. Ten of Foreman’s 16 points came in the second half.
The Billikens led for the majority of the first half and built a lead as high as nine, but were never able to break the game open as Richmond kept clawing back. SLU took a one-point lead (27-26) into halftime.
Richmond came out firing in the second half and led by as many as 10 six minutes into the second half. But the resilient Billikens never let up and utilized an 18-4 spurt – sparked by a Jalen Johnson four-point play – to grab a lead they would not relinquish.
Every time Richmond pulled to within a basket of the lead, SLU would answer. French had two baskets late, Roby hit a 3, and Johnson converted a layup to keep the Billikens on top as they eventually posted the seven-point win.
SLU returns to action Tuesday night when they face Rhode Island in an earlier-than-usual 6 p.m. tip at Chaifetz Arena. The game will be televised on CBS Sports Network.
