DC Studios co-chief Peter Safran has made clear that a second season of the HBO series Lanterns is not guaranteed, despite strong viewership and early creative work already underway. In interviews this week, Safran said a decision on the show’s future will come before the end of 2026 and will rest primarily on whether the creative team develops a story worthy of following Season 1.

Lanterns, which starred Aaron Pierre as John Stewart and Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan, premiered on August 16 and concluded its eight-episode first season on October 4. The series launched with 9.3 million global viewers in its first three days—the largest debut for a DC Studios title on HBO Max—and its finale drew a series-high audience of roughly 10.5 million viewers. Those numbers placed it among the stronger recent genre offerings on the platform.

Despite that performance, HBO has not issued a renewal order. Earlier comments from HBO chief Casey Bloys indicated no second season was actively in development at the time. Showrunner Chris Mundy has confirmed the same publicly, stating there is “nothing official.” A writers’ room has nonetheless been operating for weeks, with Mundy joined by writers including Christopher Cantwell. Co-creators Damon Lindelof and Tom King are not expected to return for any potential second season.

Safran, speaking with outlets including IGN and Collider, framed the decision around creative standards rather than commercial results alone. “If, I think, the collective group of HBO and DC and Chris Mundy and the team all feel like we’ve got something that is a worthy successor to quite a beloved first season of television, then I wouldn’t be surprised to see more,” he said. He added that the group would determine whether Season 2 moves forward by year’s end.

Mundy has indicated that any continuation would likely remain grounded and Earth-based, consistent with the show’s True Detective-inspired approach rather than expanding heavily into the broader cosmic Green Lantern Corps. Season 1 was structured largely as a self-contained mystery, though it left certain narrative threads open. James Gunn has referred to the October 4 episode as a season finale rather than a series finale, while also confirming that John Stewart will appear in the upcoming Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow.

For now, Lanterns sits in a familiar industry holding pattern: creative development is active, audience numbers are solid, and executives are publicly emphasizing quality over automatic continuation. Fans should expect greater clarity on whether the series returns—or whether its characters continue solely on the big screen—before the close of 2026.
