Tiffani Thiessen is back in the halls of a teen series, this time on the other side of the desk. In Coven Academy, the Freeform and Disney+ supernatural drama that premiered October 1, 2026, she plays Miss Emma Graves, the glamorous and exacting head of Crescent Veil Academy, an elite New Orleans boarding school for witches and warlocks.
The series, created by Tim Federle (High School Musical: The Musical: The Series), follows sharp, sarcastic New Yorker Briar (Malina Pauli Weissman) as she arrives in the city after her mother’s death and discovers that Crescent Veil is far more than a school for troubled girls. Power is currency, secrets are dangerous, and the students — including warlock Jake (Malachi Barton), mind-reading Sasha (Jordan Leftwich), time-bending Tegan (Ora Duplass), and newly turned vampire Ollie (Louis Thresher) — are caught between ancient supernatural conflicts and the ordinary pressures of friendship and attraction. Devon Sawa guest-stars as Mr. Cole, a charismatic warlock professor.
Thiessen’s character is written as part of that history, not merely its administrator. Graves is a former student who once had a coven of her own, and Federle has described that generational thread as central to the show. In interviews ahead of the premiere, Thiessen said Graves’s attachment to the school is personal. She does not have children of her own, Thiessen noted, and the academy is where she puts her care and authority. “Her love for that school is massive, hence the reason why she’s still there,” she told Disney. “There’s something maternal about that, even though she might not be an actual mother.”
The role also lands close to home for the actress, who has spoken about watching her teenage daughter navigate female friendship in high school. She told Entertainment Weekly that the series is built on the idea that the young witches are strong alone and stronger together — a theme she has repeated in other press, framing the show around sisterhood, intuition, and belonging. At 52, she has also described the job as a full-circle return to teen television after defining roles as Kelly Kapowski on Saved by the Bell and Valerie Malone on Beverly Hills, 90210, followed by later work on White Collar and Alexa & Katie. This time she is the veteran on a set of younger leads, a position she has said she enjoys.
Disney Kids & Family and Federle’s Chorus Boy Productions developed the series after a pilot order in March 2025. Principal photography ran in Vancouver from December 2025 to March 2026. The show is structured as a run of short chapters — Disney has described a 21-chapter season — and debuted on Freeform as part of the network’s 31 Nights of Halloween, with the season available the next day on Disney+ and Hulu.
For viewers who grew up with Thiessen on network teen soaps, Coven Academy places a familiar face inside a newer Disney formula: found family, a haunted city, and a school that keeps its own secrets. Graves is the adult who knows more than she is willing to say, and the students who have to decide whether to trust her.
