St. Louis CITY SC extended their club-record unbeaten streak to 10 matches across all competitions Saturday night, rolling to a 3-1 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes at PayPal Park.
Daniel Edelman opened the scoring in the eighth minute, and Simon Becher netted twice to power the visitors. The result improved CITY SC’s all-time record against San Jose to 7-1-0 and made them 4-0-0 at PayPal Park since joining MLS in 2023.
Edelman needed only eight minutes to strike. The midfielder finished a right-footed shot from the center of the box into the middle-right of the goal, with assists from Conrad Wallem and Sangbin Jeong. It was Edelman’s second goal of the season and the second-fastest goal CITY SC has scored this year.
Becher doubled the lead in the 27th minute, rising to head home a corner from Eduard Löwen. St. Louis took that 2-0 advantage into the break.
San Jose answered quickly after halftime. Beau Leroux pulled one back in the 47th minute with a right-footed strike from outside the box into the bottom-left corner. CITY SC restored the three-goal cushion just eight minutes later when Becher finished a right-footed shot from the center of the box, set up by Tomas Totland. The brace gave Becher his third and fourth goals of the season and marked his third career MLS multi-goal game (second with St. Louis).
Four different players recorded assists on the night: Löwen, Jeong, Wallem, and Totland. Carlo Holse made his MLS debut as a second-half substitute.
Head coach Yoann Damet praised the group’s approach on the road. “We spoke about that this week in terms of the way we want to play. We want to stay true to who we are… We want to be on the front foot in the way we defend. At the same time, we want to try to take control of the game,” Damet said. “Tonight, I thought again, we faced a good team on the other side that gave us a hard time at times, but I’m quite happy with the way we dealt with it and the way we came out of the game. So, a lot of positives tonight.”
Becher, who now has four goals this season, emphasized the collective. “Always happy to score. And of course, helping the team win is the first and most important thing. We came here and getting three points, matching the performance, and getting the win as well was something that we put a lot of emphasis on this week. It’s never easy to go on the road and get a win. So really proud of the guys and the way we executed the game plan.”
St. Louis outshot San Jose 13-7 and put seven attempts on target to the Earthquakes’ two. Both sides finished with yellow cards late: Wallem and Totland for CITY SC, Timo Werner and Reid Roberts for San Jose.
CITY SC will look to keep the momentum going Wednesday when they travel to face Sporting Kansas City at Sporting Park. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. CT.
