Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller with a screenplay by Drew Goddard, this adaptation of Andy Weir’s beloved novel takes everything that made the book special and elevates it for the big screen. Ryan Gosling delivers a career-highlight performance as Ryland Grace, a reluctant hero who wakes up alone on a spaceship with amnesia, facing an impossible mission to save Earth from a dying sun.

Gosling is simply magnetic here. He brings the perfect mix of dry humor, vulnerability, and wide-eyed wonder. Watching him gradually piece together the stakes of his mission while grappling with fear, loneliness, and scientific puzzles is pure cinematic joy. He carries long stretches of the film essentially solo with remarkable charm and emotional depth.

Then comes the game-changer: Rocky.

The unexpected friendship that develops between Grace and his alien counterpart is the emotional core of the movie — and it’s executed beautifully. Their banter, problem-solving sessions, and growing bond deliver some of the funniest, most touching moments in recent sci-fi. The creature design and motion-capture/voice work for Rocky are phenomenal, making him feel fully alive and instantly lovable.

Visually, Project Hail Mary is stunning. The space sequences — particularly the vast, eerie shots of the spacecraft, alien vessels, and cosmic phenomena — are breathtaking. Lord and Miller’s signature energy shines through in the clever editing, inventive problem-solving montages, and a tone that balances hard science with accessible wonder. The film respects the audience’s intelligence while remaining thoroughly entertaining.

At its heart, this is a story about curiosity, resilience, and the power of connection — even across species. In a cinematic landscape often dominated by cynicism and darkness, Project Hail Mary feels like a warm, optimistic embrace. It’s smart without being pretentious, emotional without being manipulative, and genuinely funny throughout.
