In a heartfelt announcement that marks the end of an era for local broadcasting, longtime KSDK (Channel 5) news anchor Mike Bush has revealed his plans to retire in August 2026. The news, shared with station staff and the public today, concludes a remarkable 41-year tenure at the NBC affiliate, where Bush has become a trusted voice in living rooms across the region.

Bush joined KSDK in 1985 as a sports reporter, quickly rising to sports director just a year later. His smooth transition to news anchoring began in 2002, and by 2003, he was a full-time fixture on the evening newscasts, co-anchoring the 5 p.m., 6 p.m., and 10 p.m. shows. Over the years, he has earned a reputation for professionalism, compassion, and storytelling excellence.

“Choosing to plant my roots in St. Louis, and at KSDK, was the best professional decision I ever made,” Bush said in a statement. “Even when other opportunities came along, this always felt like the right place.”

One of Bush’s most enduring contributions is his “Making a Difference” series, which highlights stories of kindness, perseverance, and community spirit—providing a counterbalance to the often challenging news of the day.

Bush’s accolades speak to his impact: three national Edward R. Murrow Awards, dozens of regional Murrows, over 100 Mid-America Emmy Awards, and induction into the St. Louis Media History Hall of Fame in April 2025. Beyond the anchor desk, he has hosted the annual “Show of Strength” fundraiser for the Muscular Dystrophy Association and the national Musial Awards on CBS.

Station leadership praised Bush’s legacy. “Mike has been the heart and soul of KSDK 5 On Your Side for over four decades,” said General Manager Alicia Elsner. “His award-winning journalism, his compassion for our community, and his dedication to making a difference have set a standard that will inspire us for years to come.”

News Director Tim Geraghty added, “While we will find someone to co-anchor our afternoon and evening newscasts, we will not find someone who can replace Mike’s passion for this community, for journalism, and for 5 On Your Side.”

Bush plans to stay through major milestones, including the station’s move to a new newsroom in January 2026, coverage of the Olympics, the Super Bowl on NBC, and the upcoming storm seasons.

As St. Louis prepares to bid farewell to one of its most beloved broadcasters, Bush’s career stands as a testament to longevity, integrity, and the power of local journalism to connect and uplift a community.
