The Tennessee Titans have parted ways with head coach Brian Callahan, ending his tumultuous 20-month tenure just weeks before the team’s bye week. The decision, announced Monday afternoon by team owner Amy Adams Strunk, comes on the heels of a 1-10 record that has left the franchise mired in controversy and underperformance.
Callahan, a 42-year-old offensive mind who previously served as the Cincinnati Bengals’ offensive coordinator, was hired in January 2024 to inject creativity into the Titans’ stagnant attack. His arrival was hailed as a fresh start for a team coming off a 6-11 season under the deposed Mike Vrabel. However, Callahan’s Titans struggled from the outset, finishing his rookie year at 3-14 amid quarterback instability and defensive woes.
This season has been an unmitigated disaster. The Titans’ lone win came in Week 3 against the Green Bay Packers, but a seven-game losing streak followed, capped by a 27-10 humiliation at home against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. Callahan’s offense ranks dead last in the NFL in points scored (13.2 per game) and yards per game (265.4), plagued by turnovers and an inability to protect second-year quarterback Will Levis, who has been sacked 28 times.
Sources close to the organization cite a toxic locker room atmosphere and poor clock management as key factors in the firing. “It was clear the team had tuned him out,” one anonymous front-office executive told ESPN. “Brian’s a brilliant play-caller, but he couldn’t lead the group through the adversity.”
Strunk, in a brief statement, praised Callahan’s efforts but emphasized the need for “immediate change” to salvage the season. “We appreciate Brian’s dedication, but our fans deserve better,” she said.
Defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson has been named interim head coach, with the 34-year-old tasked with rallying a demoralized squad for the final six games.
