On an absolutely beautiful August evening under the stars at Kansas City’s Starlight Theatre, Teddy Swims delivered a soul-stirring performance that left the crowd buzzing with energy. The “I’ve Tried Everything But Therapy” tour stop on August 23rd, was a testament to Swims’ meteoric rise as a vocal powerhouse, blending soul, R&B, and pop with raw emotion and charisma. With rising star Cian Ducrot as the opening act, the night was a showcase of heartfelt performances and undeniable talent.
Cian Ducrot took the stage at 7:00 PM, warming up the audience with his emotive piano-driven ballads and infectious energy. His soulful voice and relatable storytelling set a reflective tone, priming the audience for the emotional journey ahead. Ducrot’s connection with the audience was immediate, as he shared anecdotes between songs, earning cheers and sing-alongs from the packed venue. He was a much welcomed bonus for me personally, I had no idea he was opening, but knew of him from watching a lot of his flash mob videos over the last few years.
When Teddy Swims took the stage at 8:00 PM, the energy in the amphitheater surged. Dressed in his signature casual yet cool style, Swims exuded authenticity from the first note. Opening with the heart-wrenching “Not Your Man,” he immediately showcased his vocal range, effortlessly navigating from silky falsettos to gritty, soulful belts.
Swims’ setlist was a masterclass in balancing emotional depth with high-energy moments. Tracks like “Some Things I’ll Never Know” and “What More Can I Say” from his latest release, I’ve Tried Everything But Therapy Pt. 2, highlighted his ability to pour raw emotion into his performance. His stage presence was magnetic, engaging the audience with humor and heartfelt moments, like when he paused to thank fans for their support, sharing how much performing in Kansas City meant to him.
The backing band and singers elevated the experience, adding lush harmonies and tight instrumentation that complemented Swims’ voice. He closed out the night with an encore rendition of “The Door,” where the band’s funky grooves had the crowd dancing under the open sky.
Starlight Theatre’s open-air setting added a magical backdrop to the night, with a clear sky and gentle breeze enhancing the experience. The staff were all very friendly and efficient, ensuring smooth entry and seating. The entire experience was top notch. It was my first time here, I will definitely be back.
