Last night, Nine Inch Nails delivered a visceral, electrifying performance at Chicago’s United Center as part of their Peel It Back World Tour. The industrial rock legends, led by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, alongside touring members Robin Finck, Alessandro Cortini, and Josh Freese, transformed the arena into a pulsing, immersive sonic and visual experience. With Boys Noize as the opening act, the night was a masterclass in raw energy and artistic precision.
From the moment the lights dimmed and the haunting intro tape of Laura Palmer’s Theme (an Angelo Badalamenti cover) filled the arena, the crowd was locked in. The band kicked off with Right Where It Belongs, its melancholic build setting an introspective tone before exploding into the aggressive Ruiner. The setlist leaned heavily on The Downward Spiral (1994), with tracks like March of the Pigs, Closer, and Reptile delivering the gut-punching intensity NIN is known for. Fan favorites from Pretty Hate Machine (Head Like a Hole) and With Teeth (The Hand That Feeds) ignited the crowd, while deeper cuts like Piggy (Nothing Can Stop Me Now) and Heresy showcased the band’s willingness to dig into their catalog.
A highlight was the B-stage segment, where the band performed acoustic renditions and remixes, including a haunting The Frail transitioning into The Wretched. The collaboration with Boys Noize on Vessel, Parasite (a How to Destroy Angels cover), and Came Back Haunted added a fresh electronic edge, blending seamlessly with NIN’s industrial roots. The live debut of As Alive As You Need Me to Be from the upcoming Tron: Ares soundtrack was a surprise, its pulsating rhythm and futuristic vibe fitting perfectly into the set. A cover of David Bowie’s I’m Afraid of Americans brought a political edge, with Reznor’s snarling delivery cutting through the arena.
The staging, designed with creative director Todd Tourso and MTLA.studio, was a spectacle. Visuals of rain, moving silhouettes, and dramatic curtain drops, projected onto translucent fabric, created a cinematic atmosphere. Paul “Arlo” Guthrie’s lighting design amplified the mood, shifting from stark whites to deep reds, mirroring the emotional arcs of the songs. Reznor’s commanding presence—alternating between raw screams and tender croons—tied it all together, proving why NIN remains a force in live music.

The United Center was alive with a diverse crowd—longtime fans in black band tees mixed with younger listeners discovering NIN’s catalog. The energy was palpable, especially during March of the Pigs and Head Like a Hole, where the floor became a sea of jumping bodies. The B-stage moments offered a breather, with fans swaying to the stripped-down The Wretched. Reznor’s intensity never wavered, and his chemistry with the band, particularly Finck’s searing guitar work and Freese’s relentless drumming, was a reminder of NIN’s live prowess.
Critics and fans alike have praised the tour’s artistry, and this show was no exception. The collaboration with Boys Noize added a modern twist, while the visuals and set design elevated the performance into a multi-sensory experience. If there was a critique, it’s that the setlist could have included more from The Fragile (like We’re In This Together, a fan hope) or other rarities, but the balance of hits and deep cuts kept the momentum high.
