“It’s pure angst about wanting to rid yourself of your phone and societal expectations,” says lead singer of NYC-based shoegaze/noise-rock quartet LAVEDA, Ali Genevich, about their new single “CELLPHONE.” The track, a raw and angular exploration of digital fatigue and modern disconnect, due to constant dopamine hits from our phones, inundation of information, and added stress that comes from oversaturation of social media, is from the band’s upcoming third album Love, Darla (out September 12, 2025 via Bar/None Records).

Laveda is continuing to build anticipation for their third album with the release of this searing new single. Co-written and performed by Genevich and guitarist Jacob Brooks, the track was born from a jam session in Los Angeles in summer 2023 with longtime collaborator Dylan Sky. Genevich describes it as a “borderline nonsensical” outpouring of emotion about the existential overwhelm of life as it is today, through electrifying sonics and unfiltered lyricism. “The music industry feels hyper competitive in this negative way when I’m absorbing everything through a screen,” she explains. “What I love is connecting with other bands and people in real life– that’s what it’s all about.”

The video for the new track which premieres via The Alternative captures the chaotic charm of office malaise with a punk-rock wink, thanks to director Adam Urbaetis’s wild vision and Ali’s deadpan performance. “This video was insanely fun to be in,” Ali says. “I felt like a kid in high school just fucking around in an office space.” Running on zero sleep by day two, Ali leaned fully into the role of the exhausted office drone: “I think it added to the ‘I’m-so-over-it, tired-girl-at-the-office’ look.” With behind-the-scenes magic from a crew that “absolutely crushed it,” and Adam at the helm, the result is a vivid, off-kilter take on burnout and digital-era disconnection.

In addition, Laveda has been added to Austin’s psych rock festival, Levitation 2025Set to perform on Thursday, September 25th at Mohawk (912 Red River St, Austin, TX 78701), they will be joined by Grumpy and Slater as support for The Dandy Warhols. Following the energetic lead single “Heaven,” which evoked the noisy and grungy catharsis of Sonic Youth, Babes in Toyland, and A Place to Bury Strangers, “Cellphone” is another compelling glimpse into Love, Darla’s thematic and sonic depth. With that raw and immediate energy, “Cellphone” embodies Laveda’s move toward sharper edges and stripped-down experimentation.

Although “Cellphone” is the second oldest track on Love, Darla, it contributed in shaping the sonic shift that defines the record. “It heavily inspired a slight shift in our sound and the songs we wrote that followed it,” says Genevich. “But I do think this song is more of a stand-alone track.”

Earlier this month, Laveda announced their signing to Bar/None Records, joining the ranks of iconic alumni such as They Might Be Giants and Yo La Tengo. “We’re excited to be working with a label that has a really incredible history of releases,” said Genevich. “It’s an honor to be a part of it.”

Their upcoming album Love, Darla captures Laveda in transformation—both sonically and personally. Now based in Queens, NY, the band—rounded out by Dan Carr (bass/guitar) and Joe Taurone (drums)—pulls from gritty NYC influences and an expanding artistic palette. “It feels like a departure,” Genevich explains. “I think it’s my most personal body of work and also the most collaborative thing we’ve all done as Laveda.”

Cellphone” is released on July 16, 2025, on all major streaming platforms via Bar/None Records. Laveda’s third LP, Love, Darla, follows September 12, 2025.

“CELLPHONE”

I don’t wanna be your boyfriend anymore
I don’t wanna be your girlfriend anymore
I don’t need to know that my hair looks like a boy
I don’t need to know that my hair looks like a boy
I don’t wanna blame a cellphone anymore
I don’t wanna beat myself up anymore
I don’t need to know that my hair looks like a boy
I don’t need to know that my hair looks like a boy
Hang on
You said I suck
I know I don’t
I don’t wanna blame a cellphone anymore
I don’t wanna have a cellphone anymore
I don’t need to know that my hair looks like a boy
I don’t need to know that my hair looks like a boy
Baby don’t on my cellphone anymore
I don’t know her cellphone anymore
I don’t need to know that my hair looks like a boy
I don’t need to know that my hair looks like a boy
I said I want it
Incinerate it
I know you won’t
Say you wanna be here?
Everybody needs you
Everybody needs you
So everybody needs you
Everybody needs you
And you know you gotta be
Everybody needs you
