In a gripping pitcher’s duel at Arsenal BG Ballpark, the Gateway Grizzlies clinched a dramatic 2-1 victory over the Evansville Otters in the decisive game of their three-game series, sealing the win with a walk-off error in the ninth inning.

Both starting pitchers delivered stellar performances. Gateway’s Gage Vailes was nearly untouchable, surrendering just one run on three hits over six innings, striking out four and walking two. Evansville’s Garret Simpson matched Vailes’ brilliance, also allowing one run on three hits across six innings, with two walks and one strikeout.

The Otters struck first in the third inning. After Vailes retired the first seven batters, he issued a walk to Parks Bouck, who was promptly driven in by David Mendham’s RBI double, giving Evansville a 1-0 lead. Vailes quickly regained control, escaping the inning without further damage.

The Grizzlies responded in the fifth. Edwin Mateo drew a one-out walk, stole second, and scored on Tanner Garrison’s RBI double, tying the game at 1-1. Despite squandered opportunities in the seventh and eighth innings—stranding two runners and leaving the bases loaded—Gateway stayed resilient.

The game’s turning point came in the ninth against Evansville reliever Alex Valdez (1-1). Garrison led off with his third double of the day, positioning the winning run at second. Cole Brannen’s sacrifice bunt was misplayed by Valdez, whose errant throw to first sailed high, allowing pinch-runner Jose Alvarez to score the game-winning run, handing Gateway their first walk-off victory of the season.

With this win, the Grizzlies wrapped up a successful 5-4 homestand and now head to Avon, Ohio, to face the Lake Erie Crushers. Ben Harris will take the mound for Gateway in the series opener at Crushers Stadium, with first pitch set for 6:05 p.m. CT. The Grizzlies aim to build on their back-to-back tight victories over the Otters as they hit the road.
