Cardinals Lose First Arbitration Case Since Gregg Jefferies In 1994

Jack Flaherty won his arbitration case against the Cardinals, after they submitted a $3 million price tag for him in 2021 and he countered at $3.9 million. He will make $3.9 million in 2021. It’s the first arbitration case the Cardinals have lost since 1994 (Gregg Jefferies).

The win for Flaherty makes him an extra $900,000 this year, and sets himself up for a better raise in 2022, since arbitration builds on prior years. It also sets up better and higher comp numbers for future arbitration eligible pitchers.

He would have made $604,500 over a normal 2020 campaign, and he was due a healthy raise as he entered arbitration. The Cardinals were willing to pay Flaherty almost five times what he would’ve made in 2020 in 2021.
