Everyone who’s heard the name Chingy (Howard Bailey, Jr) right away thinks of “One Call Away”, “Right Thurr”, “Pullin Me Back” and other great hits he has made. So when I first heard of him people automatically said “That rapper”. He’s not a rapper, he’s an artist with a passion to say things in his own way.
Then you hear of Meg & Tyler, a country duo with their rhinestones and cowboy boots. Meg, formerly from the group Steel Magnolia, brings her southern charm and hometown roots to “The Whoa Down”, all while Tyler brings his song writing and producing to the mix.
When I saw the video and heard the lyrics from these independent artists, I quickly noticed this song made me want to be with friends by a bonfire after Friday night lights. This song is a feel good dance hall, two stepping, twist turning dance song that will end your night wanting more.
Also it wasn’t Chingy trying to be country. It’s him collaborating with a country duo. Meg & Tyler bring their country roots while Chingy brings his own vibe to this. Their collaboration of music brought something we never knew we needed. Yes we have heard covers or remakes of country songs and it’s clearly not that, this is ONE OF A KIND!! This song is not a cover or remix, it’s a feel good country/rap collaboration.
Music is not just a single genre, it’s all forms of notes that comes from the heart and connects with others. This song doesn’t feel forced or like the lyrics were changed to fit in a hip hop/rap chorus. It’s a song that you know just happened to mesh on its own. Chingy runs to the beat of his own drum. He sings from deep within. He has that soul and passion that comes out when he’s dropping his lyrics. To say that this is just a rap country song is an insult on its own. Chingy doesn’t follow, he leads. The music video alone doesn’t even look like it was planned. It looks like a couple of friends hanging out just doing their thing.
Appreciate the music, the soul, their passion. These 3 independent artist are going to take us by storm, even bigger than “Old Town Road” did.
So yes, we got our George Straight country, we have our Luke Bryan country, and now we have our Meg & Tyler and Chingy.
