Tenacious D brought their “Tenacious D in Post Apocalypto Tour 2019” to Stifel Theatre last night, and it was a truly colorful experience. Kyle Gass and Jack Black, the duo that make up the comedy rock band, were welcomed by a rowdy and animated crowd full of the truest fans.

Opening up the show was Wynchester, a duo comprised of Mike Bray and John Konesky, two Tenacious D collaborators. The set was gently comedic enough to get the audience warmed up, but filled with musical talent. The close to 30 minute set included original songs like “Two Man Job” as well as a hillbilly version of Lionel Richie’s “Easy Like Sunday Morning.” It was a relaxed introduction into the adventure that awaited.

Tenacious D began their show by performing the entirety of their newest album, Post-Apocalypto. The album was originally released in accompaniment with an animated film of the same title, and that is precisely what the crowd experienced last night. The band stayed behind a curtain, allowing the film to play out, only to fade away as Gass and Black performed their short comedic songs in between clips. It was a story of the apocalypse, women, and robots, and their fans loved all of it.

For the second act of their performance, the band came out from the curtain to perform “all of their greatest hits.” Black sang out each song with his distinct vocals, showed off his dancing skills with “Sax-a-Boom” and yes, beat the devil in a musical showdown. Their fans sang, danced, and laughed along throughout each song of the night.

Tenacious D has proclaimed that they are the greatest band in the world. Is it true? Absolutely not. However, their fans all left with smiles on their faces, and although their humor and performance isn’t for everyone, it brought joy to some. At the end of the day, that’s what matters.
