Missouri freshman offensive lineman Johnnie Jones is on a heart transplant waiting list after doctors found a far more serious condition than the one first flagged when he arrived on campus.

Head coach Eli Drinkwitz told reporters Tuesday that team medical staff identified a heart issue during Jones’s summer check-in. The Venice, Florida, product, who graduated from Venice High School this past spring, was later sent to the Mayo Clinic in Florida. There, physicians found what Drinkwitz described as a “much more significant issue.” Jones was added to the transplant list last week and remains hospitalized, according to reporting from PowerMizzou and CBS Sports.

Drinkwitz, visibly emotional at the podium, said the news has been difficult for the program to absorb.

“It’s just hard,” he said. “It’s tough right now. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family as they go through this. I know Johnnie was watching our game.”

He added that the situation has landed harder because of how young Jones is.

“It’s just hard, an 18-year-old with everything in front of him, and you’re just never prepared for that kind of news,” Drinkwitz said. “Our team was not prepared for that news. We’re praying for him, and we hope that Mizzou fans are joining in with us because he needs help in a hurry. We’re pulling for you, buddy.”

Jones arrived in Columbia as one of the headliners of Missouri’s 2026 class. The 6-foot-6, roughly 305-pound tackle was rated the No. 108 overall prospect in the 247Sports rankings and the top player in that Tiger haul, choosing Missouri over offers that included Georgia, Miami, Oklahoma and Ole Miss. He has not been with the team during Missouri’s start to the season.

Drinkwitz’s comments came a week after No. 14 Missouri’s 45-17 win over previously unbeaten Florida, a result he has called his best victory with the Tigers. On Tuesday, the focus was not on the scoreboard.

The program is asking fans to keep Jones and his family in Florida in their prayers while he waits for a donor. For an 18-year-old who was supposed to be starting a college career, the timeline is no longer about snaps or a depth chart. It is about a heart, and about getting help quickly.
