Avalanche Smother Blues in 6-1 Rout

Any momentum the St. Louis Blues hoped to build early in the season vanished inside Ball Arena, where the Colorado Avalanche delivered a relentless 6-1 drumming that laid bare the gulf in depth between the two Central Division rivals.

From the opening puck drop, Colorado dictated the terms, unleashing a heavy, fast-paced attack that suffocated St. Louis in all three zones.

The Avalanche wasted no time establishing control, buzzing around the St. Louis net and capitalizing on defensive breakdowns. Martin Nečas set the early tone for Colorado, beating Blues goaltender Jordan Binnington to open the scoring. Before St. Louis could settle into its structure, Cale Makar joined the rush, snapping a crisp shot past Binnington to double the advantage.

Colorado’s offense continued to roll in waves, orchestrated by star center Nathan MacKinnon. Operating with precision at the top of the zone, MacKinnon carved up the Blues’ defensive coverage, stringing together three assists to keep the pressure turned high. Nečas added a second tally on the night, while Josh Manson and Artturi Lehkonen both found the back of the net to extend the lead to a commanding margin.

Nicolas Roy added another goal for the Avalanche, as Colorado’s forward group relentlessly won puck battles in the corners and dominated second-chance opportunities in the crease.

For the Blues, the evening was an uphill battle characterized by puck-management troubles and an inability to sustain offensive zone time. Top playmakers Robert Thomas and Pavel Buchnevich were effectively neutralized by Colorado’s high-pressing defense, rarely finding clear lanes through the neutral zone.

St. Louis finally broke through in the third period to avoid the shutout when young forward Dalibor Dvorský collected a pass from defenseman Theo Lindstein and beat Avalanche netminder Mackenzie Blackwood. However, the goal was little more than a silver lining on an otherwise miserable night in the Rockies.

Despite allowing six goals, Binnington was exposed by a total defensive collapse ahead of him. The Blues goalie was peppered with 36 shots on the night, turning away 30 of them as Colorado repeatedly generated high-danger scoring chances in tight. At the other end, Blackwood turned in a quiet, composed 25-save performance to secure the win.
