Prime Video released the official trailer Thursday for Madden, David O. Russell’s biopic of Hall of Fame coach, broadcaster, and video-game namesake John Madden. The two-minute preview arrives ahead of a limited theatrical opening on November 11 and a worldwide streaming debut on Prime Video on November 18.

The film’s tagline is blunt: “Football wouldn’t be football, without Madden.” The trailer leans into that idea, jumping from sideline chaos and Super Bowl-era Raiders footage to Madden’s forced exit from coaching, his second life in the broadcast booth, and the unlikely origin of Madden NFL. Cage’s Madden shouts “I love this game!” and repeats a line attributed to his father: once you start working, you never stop—so stay with what you love as long as you can. A later beat shows Electronic Arts founder Trip Hawkins (John Mulaney) pitching a primitive football game and asking Madden to put his playbook—and his mind—into the software.

Cage stars as Madden. Christian Bale plays Raiders owner Al Davis, described in studio materials as Madden’s best friend and “true original.” Kathryn Hahn portrays Virginia Madden; Sienna Miller plays Carol Davis. Shane Gillis also appears. Russell directed and co-wrote the script with Cambron Clark. The film is rated R for language and runs about 1 hour 50 minutes.

Amazon MGM’s official synopsis frames the story as Madden’s arc from a Super Bowl-winning partnership with Davis and the Raiders, through his years as football’s most recognizable voice, to the creation of the worldwide Madden NFL franchise. The studio calls it a celebration of a once-in-a-century personality, his marriage, his friendships, and a love of the game that outlasted the sideline.

The November 18 streaming date lands in Thanksgiving week, a calendar choice that tracks with Madden’s own broadcast history. He and Pat Summerall helped make the holiday NFL games a living-room tradition; turducken jokes and turkey-leg bits were part of the package. A limited theatrical run the week before positions the movie for awards eligibility while the streamer handles the wide audience.

Early reaction to the trailer has been mixed on tone. Some viewers see Cage’s physical transformation and oversized energy as larger-than-life in the way Madden himself was. Others have compared the look and cadence to parody. Either way, the pairing of Cage and Bale, Russell’s track record with ensemble character pieces, and the built-in familiarity of the Madden name give the film a clear hook for sports fans and awards-season watchers alike.

Madden arrives in select theaters November 11 and on Prime Video November 18.
