Sunday night at Arrowhead Stadium looked familiar in the best possible way for the Kansas City Chiefs.
Patrick Mahomes threw for 382 yards and three touchdowns, Travis Kelce added another line to the record book, and Harrison Butker drilled a 40-yard field goal as overtime expired to lift the Chiefs to a 33-30 win over the Indianapolis Colts. Kansas City improved to 2-0. Indianapolis fell to 0-2.
Including the playoffs, Mahomes now has 31 game-winning drives in the fourth quarter or overtime since 2018, the most in that span. In the regular season he is 8-0 in overtime as a starter, the best undefeated overtime record by a starting quarterback.
The final drive was vintage Kansas City. After Spencer Shrader’s 38-yard field goal tied the game at 30 with 3:11 left in overtime, Mahomes moved the offense 46 yards in seven plays. A third-and-1 completion to Kenneth Walker kept the chains moving. Butker finished it.
Mahomes completed 32 of 47 passes without an interception. Walker carried 24 times for 117 yards. Kelce caught nine passes for 101 yards and a touchdown.
Kelce’s night carried extra weight. After his first score of the season — a 13-yard touchdown from Mahomes that put Kansas City in front in the first half — the tight end passed Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk to become the NFL’s all-time leader in yards after the catch. At 36, Kelce is still turning short throws into first downs and, on this night, history.
The game never settled. Daniel Jones found Tyler Warren for a 1-yard touchdown on Indianapolis’ opening drive. Kansas City answered and led 10-7 after one. The Colts pushed ahead 20-17 at halftime behind Jonathan Taylor and a pair of field goals. Mahomes found Xavier Worthy for a 1-yard score before the break and added another touchdown in the third.
Butker’s 28-yarder early in the fourth made it 27-20. Taylor answered with a 5-yard run with 5:37 left in regulation, tying the game at 27 and sending it to overtime.
In the extra period, Butker first hit from 31 yards. Jones then hit Laquon Treadwell for 48 yards to set up Shrader’s tying kick. Mahomes and Butker had the last word.
Jones finished 22 of 31 for 210 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Taylor rushed 24 times for 92 yards and two scores. The Colts generated 329 total yards to Kansas City’s 534 and committed the game’s only turnover.
The Chiefs next visit the 0-2 Miami Dolphins. For one more night, the formula that defined this era held: Mahomes with the ball late, Kelce still producing after the catch, and Butker closing it out under the lights.
