Texas alt-rock quartet Olive Vox arrive in St. Louis on Monday with a new record and a sharper sense of what they want to say.
The band’s debut EP, Trace It Back, is out today via Big Machine Rock. Across six tracks, Olive Vox turn inward, writing about guilt, damaged relationships, self-destructive habits, and the pressure of being defined by other people. It is not a tidy redemption story. The songs sit in the uneasy space between wanting to keep the peace and needing to be understood by someone who actually saw the struggle.
That idea is at the center of focus track “I Do,” which arrives with an official video. The band describe the song as a fight with expectations — the feeling of having a true self buried by people who thought they already had you figured out. Underneath the fear of judgment is a simpler need: to be seen by someone who was there.
Frontman Parker James has been open about why the EP sounds the way it does. He says he stopped hiding behind elusive lyrics and started writing more directly about the period he was living through. The result, he says, is a snapshot of a time when he was struggling — compiling past and present transgressions without forcing them into a clean ending.
Recent singles “Hear Me Out,” “BABYDOLL,” and “We Are Not The Same” already pointed in that direction. Trace It Back gathers that thread. The tracklist runs: “Hear Me Out,” “BABYDOLL,” “I Do,” “Far From Heaven,” “We Are Not The Same,” and “Black & White.”
Musically, the EP sits in alternative rock with post-punk, indie, and heavier edges, built around melody and live impact. That emphasis on the stage has been central to the campaign. Olive Vox have been building an audience on the road as much as on streaming platforms, topping 1.5 million cross-platform streams and 1.89 million YouTube views during the rollout.
St. Louis gets them Monday at The Pageant on Delmar, opening for The Toadies on The Charmer Tour, with Local H also on the bill. Doors are at 6 p.m., with Olive Vox scheduled for 7 p.m. The band play The Blue Note in Columbia tonight before Indianapolis on Saturday and The Pageant on Monday, then continue through Kansas City, Tulsa, and the West Coast into early October.
Days after that run wraps, Olive Vox head back out supporting Beauty School Dropout on “The Circus” fall tour, a seven-date stretch that begins Oct. 8 in Sacramento.
For St. Louis listeners, Monday is the local window: a new EP still warm, a band leaning harder into honesty, and an early slot on a stacked Pageant bill. Trace It Back is streaming now. The Pageant show is Monday, Sept. 21.
