St. Louis CITY SC is heading to its first-ever U.S. Open Cup Final.
The club delivered a composed, clinical 3-0 victory over the Colorado Rapids on Wednesday night at DICK’S Sporting Goods Park, advancing past the semifinals and writing a new chapter in franchise history. Sangbin Jeong, Simon Becher, and Alex Mățan all found the net as CITY SC limited the Rapids to a single shot on target and posted its second clean sheet of the Open Cup run.
Jeong opened the scoring in the 32nd minute with a right-footed finish from the center of the box, his second career U.S. Open Cup goal and fourth of the 2026 season across all competitions. St. Louis took that 1-0 lead into the break after a first half in which Colorado managed just one shot on goal.
The visitors wasted little time extending the advantage after halftime. In the 52nd minute, Becher curled a left-footed strike from outside the box into the bottom right corner for his first Open Cup goal and eighth of the year. Conrad Wallem provided the assist — his first in the competition and seventh overall this season. Wallem has now recorded six assists in his last seven matches, the most on the squad over that span.
Seven minutes later, Mățan made it 3-0. Tomas Totland’s assist set up the Romanian forward, who finished with a right-footed shot from the center of the box into the bottom right corner. It was Mățan’s first goal in a CITY SC shirt and his first in the Open Cup. Totland picked up his second assist of the tournament and sixth across all competitions.
Roman Bürki and the St. Louis back line shut the door from there. The Rapids finished with zero shots on target in the second half. Bürki earned his second career U.S. Open Cup clean sheet as CITY SC completed a second consecutive shutout at this venue.
The result extended St. Louis’ unbeaten streak to 17 matches across all competitions. The club has now scored three or more goals in seven of its last 12 games.
Head coach Yoann Damet called the night a club-wide achievement. “We want to write a history for the club. It’s the first final in club history. It’s the first game that is going to matter for a trophy,” Damet said. “Very happy for the guys. Very happy for the group. It’s their reward for all the work they’ve been putting in, all the trust they have in each other.”
Bürki, the captain, echoed the sense of unfinished business. “It feels amazing, but the job is not done,” he said. “We talked about it before the season started that this is our goal.”
Mățan described the third goal as the moment that settled the contest. “The third goal kills the game,” he said. “Tots had a beautiful touch. Timo also had a beautiful ball. I had a good touch, and that was it.”
St. Louis will face the Columbus Crew in the 2026 U.S. Open Cup Final on Wednesday, October 21, with kickoff set for 7 p.m. CT. Before that, CITY SC returns to MLS action Saturday at Energizer Park against Toronto FC at 7:30 p.m. CT.
A first final. A statement road win at altitude. And a group that keeps finding ways to raise the standard. For a club still writing its early chapters, Wednesday night in Colorado felt like one of the bigger ones.
