St. Louis CITY2 extended their unbeaten run to five matches with a hard-fought 2-2 draw against Houston Dynamo 2 before falling 3-1 in the penalty shootout.
Houston struck first in the 17th minute when Austin Brummett finished a right-footed shot from outside the box into the bottom right corner. The visitors carried that 1-0 lead into halftime and doubled their advantage just two minutes after the restart. Miguel Perez was credited with an own goal from outside the box in the 48th minute, putting CITY2 in a difficult early second-half hole.
The home side responded with urgency. In the 70th minute, Nighte Pickering pulled one back, finishing a left-footed shot from the center of the box into the bottom left corner. Riley Lynch and Miguel Perez provided the assists on the play. Fifteen minutes later, defender Zack Lillington rose to head home the equalizer from the center of the box, tying the match at 2-2 and forcing a penalty shootout.
Houston prevailed from the spot, 3-1.
Pickering’s goal marked his third of the season and continued a strong run of form. He has now scored in consecutive matches, accounting for three goals across that span. Lillington’s header was his second goal of the year. Lynch recorded his eighth assist of the season, while Perez earned his first assist of 2026 despite the earlier own goal.
CITY2 will host North Texas SC next Friday, August 28, at Energizer Park in the teams’ final meeting of the season. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. CT.
