St. Louis CITY SC continued its remarkable run with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Western Conference-leading Houston Dynamo on Saturday night at Energizer Park, extending an unbeaten streak that now stands alone as the longest in MLS this season.
Simon Becher opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, finishing a well-worked sequence to snap Houston’s 473-minute shutout streak that had stretched across five matches. The goal marked Becher’s third in as many games and his fifth of the season. Alex Mățan earned his first assist in a CITY SC uniform on the play, with Conrad Wallem also credited.
The hosts carried the 1-0 lead into the half and controlled much of the tempo against a dangerous Dynamo side. Houston finally broke through in the 75th minute when substitute Ibrahim Aliyu equalized from close range. CITY SC’s response was swift and decisive. Ten minutes later, Dante Polvara found himself in the right place at the right time and buried a left-footed shot for the winner—his first career MLS goal and first for St. Louis.
The result pushed CITY SC’s unbeaten run to 12 matches across all competitions, including a league-record 11 consecutive MLS regular-season games without a loss in 2026. The club also improved its all-time mark against Houston to 3-3-3.
Head coach Yoann Damet praised the collective effort afterward. “You saw a team, a group, that fought for each other, that worked really hard to earn the three points,” Damet said. “That’s all I will remember tonight is the feeling of togetherness, the fight, the spirit, the mindset.”
Becher echoed the sentiment, highlighting the character required to grind out the result against the conference leaders. “It wasn’t easy. They came and tied the game back up, and we were able to continue and get the second and locked down in the back,” the forward said. “Just grinding from all 11 guys that were on the pitch.”
Polvara, who shifted into midfield late in the match before scoring, described the goal with typical defender humor. “It’s just that classic defender who finds himself in the box and gets excited about the moment,” he said. “I’ve been telling the guys for a long time that my finishing is good. They don’t believe me… Finally, I have a little bit of proof.”
CITY SC returns to Energizer Park next Sunday, August 30, for a 6 p.m. CT kickoff against FC Dallas on Sunday Night Soccer presented by Continental Tire.
