St. Louis CITY SC and the San Jose Earthquakes have agreed to a deal that will send midfielder Eduard Löwen west.
The German midfielder, a foundational piece of CITY’s roster since the club’s inaugural 2023 season, will join Bruce Arena’s side. In return, St. Louis will receive $425,000 in General Allocation Money with an additional $500,000 available in add-ons. Löwen is expected to occupy a Designated Player slot for San Jose through the remainder of the 2026 season, a structure designed to preserve allocation money and salary-cap flexibility for the Earthquakes. The designation can be bought down in future years.
Löwen’s contract with CITY was guaranteed only through the current season, with a club option for 2027. Sources indicate the midfielder approached the club in the spring about his longer-term future. Club leadership elected to wait until after the summer window before evaluating options or extensions. Löwen later requested that the organization explore potential destinations that could offer him a longer-term home. St. Louis granted that request.
The decision reflects the mutual respect that has defined Löwen’s time in St. Louis. Inside the organization he is regarded as a professional of the highest caliber—someone about whom negative comments are simply not heard. Among supporters he has been a consistent favorite, valued both for his on-field contribution and the quiet dignity he has shown through difficult personal circumstances.
Löwen arrived ahead of CITY’s expansion season and immediately became a central figure in the midfield. He logged 99 appearances for the first team. In 2023 he contributed six goals and nine assists as St. Louis topped the Western Conference in its debut campaign. This season he has recorded four goals and two assists in limited minutes after a delayed start tied to the loss of his wife to brain cancer earlier in the year.
For CITY, the transaction creates meaningful salary-cap space at a moment when the roster is already performing at a high level. Under first-year head coach Yoann Damet the team sits unbeaten in its last 10 matches and remains active in the transfer window. The club still holds an open Designated Player slot and continues to pursue attacking reinforcements, particularly at center forward, following the late-July arrival of Carlo Holse and the earlier departure of Marcel Hartel.
The move represents a clean resolution for all parties. Löwen receives the longer-term security he sought. San Jose adds a proven, high-character midfielder to a squad that has struggled for results since the World Cup break. St. Louis CITY SC gains financial flexibility while parting ways with a player who helped establish the club’s early identity and culture.
