A 16-year-old girl faces juvenile charges of assault and disorderly conduct after she ran onto the field and tackled a player during a middle school football game Tuesday night.
The incident occurred at Franklin County High School during a contest between South Middle School and Cornersville Middle School. South scored a touchdown and extra point around 8 p.m., after which a scuffle broke out between two players in the end zone. Video shows referees throwing flags as the players began walking back toward their huddles. The girl then jumped a fence, sprinted onto the field, and tackled the South Middle player involved in the altercation, knocking both to the ground. She shoved him down a second time before coaches intervened.
Referees immediately stopped the game. Officials cleared the field and stadium without further incident. No injuries were reported. South was leading 35-0 when play was halted.
The girl, a Marshall County Schools student who attended the game with her parents, was met by school resource officers as she walked off toward the Cornersville sideline. She was released to her parents that night. The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office charged her Wednesday.
Franklin County Schools issued a lifetime trespass ban from all district properties. The Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association banned her from all Cornersville home and away athletic events for one year. She was also suspended from school for 45 days. Franklin County Schools Director Dr. Roger Alsup called the behavior “unacceptable” and said the district would protect its players and coaches. The district is reviewing game-day security.
Video of the tackle circulated widely, with some comments praising the girl’s form and others raising concerns about fan safety at youth sports.
