HBO has officially greenlit a second season of IT: Welcome to Derry, the horror series based on Stephen King’s novel and the films directed by Andy Muschietti. The renewal was announced Monday, nearly a year after the first season premiered in October 2025.
The series will continue its exploration of Derry, Maine, and the ancient entity known as Pennywise. According to the official logline released by HBO:
“In 1935 during the Great Depression, a bloody massacre takes place for the Bradley Gang, a group of bank robbers who stop in Derry to buy ammo and end up facing unimaginable horror.”
Season 2 shifts the timeline from 1962 back to 1935, centering on the Bradley Gang massacre, an event referenced in King’s novel but never fully dramatized. The story follows a group of Depression-era bank robbers who stop in Derry and encounter the town’s long-standing evil.
Brad Caleb Kane will serve as sole showrunner for the new season. Kane previously shared showrunning duties with Jason Fuchs on Season 1. Andy Muschietti and Barbara Muschietti return as executive producers.
Sarah Aubrey, Head of HBO Max Original Programming, said in a statement: “We are excited to return to the chilling world of Derry and to further expand on Andy and Barbara Muschietti’s horrifically iconic adaptation. Together with Brad Caleb Kane, they will break new ground in season two, deepening the terror, the mystery, and the unforgettable Pennywise lore that fans love to devour.”
The first season was a significant success for the network, ranking among HBO Max’s strongest original series debuts. Creative development for Season 2 required additional time as the writers constructed an original story set in a markedly different historical period.
No premiere date or casting details have been announced. The production remains under Warner Bros. Television, with the Muschiettis continuing under their Double Dream banner.
Season 2 marks the next chapter in the series’ planned examination of Derry’s cyclical history of violence, moving further into the past while expanding the mythology surrounding Pennywise.
