Marvel Studios finally pulled back the curtain on its long-awaited X-Men reboot at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, confirming a new core cast and locking in a theatrical release date of May 5, 2028.
Directed by Jake Schreier (Thunderbolts*), the film marks the official arrival of mutants as a central force in the Marvel Cinematic Universe following the multiversal reset expected around Avengers: Secret Wars.
Here’s the lineup revealed on stage (with Adam Driver joining via video from set):
- Sadie Sink as Jean Grey The Stranger Things star already debuted the character in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Her Jean Grey appears set to play a major role in this new chapter.
- Kit Connor as Scott Summers / Cyclops The Heartstopper breakout takes on the iconic team leader and optic-blast specialist.
- Christopher Abbott as Professor Charles Xavier The Poor Things and Girls actor steps into the role of the telepathic mentor and founder of Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters.
- Samara Weaving as Emma Frost The Ready or Not star plays the diamond-form telepath, a complex figure who has shifted between villain and ally across X-Men history.
- Inde Navarrette as Rogue Fresh off her breakout in Obsession, Navarrette lands one of the more surprising and highly anticipated roles as the power-absorbing Southern mutant.
- Maya Boyd as Storm The Broadway actress (& Juliet) takes on the weather-controlling mutant and eventual leader.
- Adam Driver as Nathaniel Milbury / Mister Sinister In a video appearance from Pinewood Studios, Driver revealed he is playing the geneticist villain (under one of Sinister’s aliases). He teased the role with a playful fake-out toward Magneto before confirming the darker choice.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige noted that this is not the complete cast and more announcements are expected. Several key characters (including Wolverine, Beast, and others) remain uncast publicly for now.
This X-Men film is positioned as a foundational entry rather than a direct continuation of the Fox-era movies. While legacy actors such as Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, and James Marsden are expected to appear in Avengers: Doomsday, the 2028 project introduces a younger ensemble building a new continuity within the MCU.
Schreier is working from a script by Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo (both of Beef, with Calo also contributing to Thunderbolts*). Early indications suggest the story will lean into Jean Grey’s arc while establishing the broader team and the threat posed by Mister Sinister.
The announcement generated significant energy at D23, with several of the actors meeting one another for the first time backstage before walking out together. Feige’s presentation framed the project as the start of a new mutant era rather than a one-off film, leaving room for future solo projects and team expansions.
With a firm May 2028 date and a mix of rising stars and established names, Marvel has officially begun its next major franchise chapter. The mutants are no longer on the periphery—they’re moving to the center of the MCU.
