The Tampa Bay Rays made their first significant move of the trade deadline Sunday, acquiring right-hander Freddy Peralta from the New York Mets in exchange for three prospects.
Tampa Bay sent outfielder Aidan Smith, right-hander Gary Gill Hill and infielder Émilien Pitre to New York for the 30-year-old starter. The Rays will assume the remaining $2.4 million on Peralta’s contract. He is set to become a free agent after the season.
The deal gives the American League’s best team another experienced arm as it tries to hold off the New York Yankees in the AL East. The Rays entered Sunday at 65-45, 3.5 games ahead of the Yankees.
“We’re excited to welcome Freddy Peralta to the Tampa Bay Rays,” president of baseball operations Erik Neander said in a statement. “Freddy is a proven major-league starter with high stakes experience and a strong track record. Adding a pitcher and competitor of his caliber strengthens our team as we push forward.”
Peralta arrives after a difficult half-season in Queens. Acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers in January in a deal that sent top prospects Jett Williams and Brandon Sproat to Milwaukee, the two-time All-Star posted a 4.99 ERA in 22 starts and 113⅔ innings for the Mets. His strikeout rate dipped, home runs climbed, and the Mets faded from contention.
The numbers stand in sharp contrast to his 2025 season in Milwaukee, when Peralta went 17-6 with a 2.70 ERA and 204 strikeouts in 176⅔ innings. He finished fifth in National League Cy Young voting that year and earned his second All-Star selection.
At his best, Peralta mixes an upper-90s four-seam fastball with a deep mix of secondary pitches. The Rays, long known for getting the most out of pitching talent, are betting their development staff and coaching can help him rediscover that form down the stretch.
Tampa Bay’s rotation already features Drew Rasmussen, Shane McClanahan (currently on the injured list with back tightness) and Nick Martinez. Adding Peralta gives the club greater depth and a potential postseason starter as it eyes a first-round bye.
Smith, ranked No. 15 in the Rays’ system by MLB Pipeline, was the key piece heading to New York. The 22-year-old outfielder was acquired by Tampa Bay in the 2024 Randy Arozarena trade. Gill Hill and Pitre ranked Nos. 26 and 27, respectively. The Rays, who possess one of baseball’s deepest farm systems, could afford to deal from that depth.
The move comes one day after the Dodgers landed the top available starter, Tarik Skubal. Rather than sit on the sidelines, the Rays pivoted quickly to Peralta, one of the more intriguing remaining rentals.
For a franchise that rarely chases high-profile rentals, the timing made sense. Tampa Bay is having an outstanding season, its farm system remains strong, and the financial commitment is modest. Now the focus turns to whether Peralta can return to the pitcher who dominated the National League last year.
If he does, the Rays’ already formidable rotation becomes even more dangerous as October approaches.
