Sony Pictures has released the official second trailer for Zach Cregger’s highly anticipated Resident Evil reboot, giving fans a clearer and more immersive look at the director’s tense, survival-focused reinvention of the iconic Capcom franchise. The new footage dropped today, July 23, just ahead of Cregger’s appearance in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con.

The film stars Austin Abrams as Bryan, a medical courier whose routine delivery to Raccoon City General Hospital quickly spirals into a night of escalating horror. As an outbreak of infected creatures engulfs the area, Bryan finds himself locked in a relentless race for survival. Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, and Paul Walter Hauser round out the principal cast.

Unlike previous big-screen adaptations that leaned heavily into established characters and lore, Cregger’s version takes an original approach. The story unfolds on the periphery of the events of Resident Evil 2, set during Raccoon City’s catastrophic night but following a new protagonist navigating the chaos from a different vantage point. Cregger has described the film as prioritizing momentum and the visceral experience of the games, with the audience “locked in with a protagonist on a foot journey through a world hell-bent on destroying them.”

The latest trailer expands on the snowy, atmospheric dread established in the earlier teaser. It highlights practical survival elements familiar to fans of the series—scavenging for ammunition, the presence of a typewriter, and other subtle nods—while delivering unsettling sequences that emphasize isolation, sudden violence, and the creeping threat of infection. Early reactions note the trailer’s strong survival-horror tone and its fidelity to the tense pacing that defines the best entries in the video game series.

Cregger, coming off the critical and commercial success of Weapons and the earlier Barbarian, co-wrote the screenplay with Shay Hatten. The project is produced by Robert Kulzer, Zach Cregger, Roy Lee, Victor Hadida, Asad Qizilbash, and Carter Swan, with Oliver Berben, Richard Wright, and Robert Bernacci serving as executive producers. Columbia Pictures and Constantin Film are releasing the film in association with TriStar Pictures.

Resident Evil is scheduled to open in theaters and IMAX on September 18, 2026. With Cregger’s proven ability to deliver grounded yet deeply unsettling horror and a clear intention to honor the spirit of the games, this new trailer positions the film as one of the most intriguing genre releases of the fall.
