After a professional career marked by perseverance, promise, and persistent injury misfortune, left-hander Packy Naughton announced his retirement from baseball today. The 30-year-old shared the news via an emotional Instagram post, closing the book on a journey that included time with the Los Angeles Angels and the St. Louis Cardinals.

Naughton cited his body’s limitations following a third significant ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injury suffered in April while rehabbing with the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds. That setback, which required surgery in June, proved to be the final obstacle in a long battle to return to the mound.
“From growing up playing at the complex, to having my brother Jake behind the plate for me in high school, to pitching at Virginia Tech… Later, getting the opportunity to wear the Birds on the Bat with the St. Louis Cardinals changed everything,” Naughton wrote. He went on to detail the physical toll: “After multiple elbow surgeries, countless hours of rehab, and giving everything I had to get back on the mound, my body has made the decision for me. My elbow just can’t do it anymore.”
Drafted in 2017, Naughton reached the majors with the Angels in 2021 before joining the Cardinals organization. In 37 MLB appearances (eight starts), he compiled a 0-6 record with a 4.98 ERA and 48 strikeouts over 59⅔ innings. While the numbers reflect the challenges he faced, those who followed his career remember a pitcher with a competitive fire and the ability to navigate high-leverage situations, including memorable escapes with the bases loaded during his time in St. Louis.
His path was repeatedly derailed by elbow issues. Having already undergone Tommy John surgery in high school, Naughton dealt with a flexor tendon repair in 2023 and UCL reconstruction in 2024, which caused him to miss the entire 2025 season. The latest injury in April 2026, occurring just as he appeared poised for a potential return to the Cardinals bullpen, ultimately led to this difficult decision.
In his farewell message, Naughton expressed deep gratitude to his wife Taylor, brothers Jake and Liam, his parents, pitching coach Ace Adams, teammates, coaches, front office staff, and the fans who supported him. “To every fan who supported me, every teammate who battled beside me, and everyone who believed in a kid from Boston chasing a dream, thank you,” he wrote. “I’ll always be grateful that I got to live mine.
