In a significant setback for one of Prime Video’s most ambitious video game adaptations, Ryan Hurst will no longer portray Kratos in the upcoming God of War live-action series. The actor suffered a severe bicep tear while filming a stunt sequence on the Vancouver set, prompting producers Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television to recast the iconic Spartan warrior.
According to reports, Hurst — who bulked up by approximately 40 pounds to embody the physically imposing Ghost of Sparta — sustained the injury during an action sequence. He has since undergone surgery and is focusing on recovery. Initial hopes of a mid-August return proved overly optimistic given the extent of the tear, leading to the difficult decision to move forward with a replacement to avoid substantial delays.
Production on the series, which has already filmed four episodes, is temporarily on hold. The first two seasons are being shot back-to-back under showrunner Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), a structure designed to maintain narrative continuity and momentum for the multi-season adaptation. Filming is now slated to resume in mid-October 2026 following prep work beginning in mid-August.
Hurst’s casting as Kratos in January 2026 generated considerable excitement among fans. The Sons of Anarchy and The Walking Dead veteran brought deep franchise familiarity, having previously voiced and performed motion capture for Thor in God of War Ragnarök (a role that earned him a BAFTA nomination). His physical presence and gravelly delivery positioned him as a compelling live-action successor to Christopher Judge’s acclaimed video game portrayal.
The series closely follows the narrative of the 2018 God of War reboot and its 2022 sequel Ragnarök, chronicling the emotionally charged father-son journey of Kratos and Atreus as they navigate the Norse realm. Supporting cast includes Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor and Mandy Patinkin as Odin, with Frederick E.O. Toye (The Boys, Fallout) directing the initial episodes.
This development marks another challenge for the long-gestating project, which previously saw showrunner Rafe Judkins depart in 2024 before Moore took the helm. No details have emerged yet regarding potential replacements for Hurst, though the role’s demanding physical and dramatic requirements are sure to draw significant interest from the industry.
