The St. Louis Cardinals continued to bolster their pitching depth on the final day of the 2026 MLB Draft, selecting right-handed reliever Clayton Freshcorn from Texas A&M University with the 564th overall pick in the 19th round.
Freshcorn, a 6-foot, 180-pound right-hander from Waller, Texas, emerged as one of the most reliable closers in the Southeastern Conference during his junior season. In 27 appearances (one start), he posted a 2.82 ERA and 1.05 WHIP over 54.1 innings, striking out 56 batters while issuing just six walks — a remarkable 9.33 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
His 12 saves led the SEC and tied for the third-most in a single season in Texas A&M program history. He also earned consensus All-America honors, including a spot on the NCBWA All-America First Team, was a finalist for the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award, and earned First Team All-SEC recognition.
Freshcorn’s path to professional baseball took a detour through junior college. After a strong freshman campaign at McLennan Community College in 2024 — where he went 4-3 with a 2.36 ERA, three saves, and 79 strikeouts in 61 innings as a starter/reliever hybrid — he transferred to College Station for the 2025 season.
In his first year with the Aggies, he worked primarily in relief and showed flashes, posting a 4.67 ERA in 27 innings with 33 strikeouts. But 2026 was his breakout. Freshcorn shaved nearly two full runs off his ERA, dominating in high-leverage situations and delivering 18 scoreless outings. He showed his mettle in the postseason, tossing a career-high 6.2 innings with five strikeouts in his first career start during the College Station Regional.
Scouts praise Freshcorn’s athleticism and delivery. Listed at 6-0, 180 pounds with room to add strength, he generates impressive velocity and movement from a low release point and low launch height. His fastball reaches up to 97 mph with riding life, playing as a borderline plus pitch that’s especially tough on right-handed hitters up in the zone.
He complements the heater with a sweeping slider (82-85 mph) that features significant horizontal break and an upper-80s cutter that tunnels effectively off the fastball. The combination gives him multiple ways to attack hitters and generate swings-and-misses. Control has been a strength this season, as evidenced by the minuscule walk rate.
Projection-wise, Freshcorn profiles as a high-leverage reliever. He lacks a significant arm-side offering (changeup or splitter) at this stage, which may limit his starter potential, but his current arsenal and command make him a strong candidate to move quickly through the lower levels as a bullpen piece.
Whether Freshcorn signs remains to be seen — late-round college seniors and juniors sometimes return to campus — but his profile suggests a player motivated to begin his professional journey, especially after a standout junior campaign in one of the nation’s toughest conferences.
