Both players, currently with the Double-A Springfield Cardinals, will represent the National League in the annual showcase of baseball’s brightest young talent, set for July during All-Star Week in Philadelphia.
The selections underscore the depth and promise within the Cardinals’ farm system, particularly at a time when the big-league club continues to navigate the competitive NL Central. Rodriguez and Doyle join an elite group, with Rodriguez ranking as MLB Pipeline’s No. 12 overall prospect and Doyle checking in at No. 22.
Rainiel Rodriguez: A Dynamic Backstop on the Rise
At just 19 years old, Rodriguez has already made a significant impact since signing with the Cardinals out of the Dominican Republic for $300,000 in April 2024. The right-handed hitting catcher has climbed the ladder quickly, earning a promotion to Double-A this season after a strong showing in High-A.
Through his time in Springfield this year, Rodriguez is batting .288 with nine home runs, 40 RBIs, a .397 on-base percentage, and nine stolen bases in 240 at-bats. His blend of contact skills, power, and plate discipline has drawn comparisons to some of the game’s more well-rounded young receivers.
Beyond the offensive production, Rodriguez has shown encouraging signs behind the plate. Scouts praise his poise, receiving skills, and improving arm strength, which has allowed him to handle advanced pitching at a young age. His return to Philadelphia — where he spent part of his youth — adds a personal touch to what should be a memorable Futures Game experience.
“Rainiel has a bright future,” one Cardinals official noted in recent prospect evaluations. For a player who turned 19 in January, his trajectory suggests he could be knocking on the door of the major leagues sooner rather than later, potentially providing long-term stability at the catcher position.
Liam Doyle: High-Upside Southpaw with Strikeout Stuff
Liam Doyle, the Cardinals’ first-round pick (fifth overall) in the 2025 MLB Draft out of the University of Tennessee, brings electric stuff to the mound. The 22-year-old lefty stands 6-foot-2 and 220 pounds, and he has showcased a fastball that can touch the upper 90s, complemented by developing secondary offerings.
In 13 appearances (51 innings) with Springfield this season, Doyle has posted a 5.82 ERA but has generated swing-and-miss at an impressive rate, striking out 71 batters (12.53 K/9) while walking 23. His raw stuff remains a significant plus, and the Cardinals view his early professional challenges as part of the natural development curve for a high-upside arm adjusting to the demands of Double-A.
Doyle’s selection to the Futures Game validates the excitement that surrounded his draft selection. As a polished college product with legitimate starter potential, he projects as a potential frontline contributor in the Cardinals’ rotation in the coming years.
