Milwaukee Brewers highly touted infield prospect Luis Peña was taken to a local hospital Wednesday night after collapsing in the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers’ dugout during a High-A Midwest League game against the Fort Wayne TinCaps. The incident, believed to stem from overheating, forced the game to be called in the bottom of the eighth inning.
The Timber Rattlers led 9-3 at Parkview Field when play was halted. Peña, the 19-year-old shortstop and one of the Brewers’ top prospects (ranked as high as No. 2 in the organization and around No. 21-23 overall by MLB Pipeline), had already contributed offensively with an RBI single and made several defensive plays earlier in the contest. He was reportedly pulled from the game prior to the collapse.
Eyewitness accounts and local media reports described EMS crews responding quickly to the dugout. An ambulance transported Peña from the stadium as concerned teammates and staff gathered nearby. The game was officially suspended due to the medical emergency, with the final score recorded as a 9-3 Wisconsin victory after eight innings.
Late Wednesday night, multiple sources connected to the Timber Rattlers clubhouse reported that Peña was stable and responsive following the incident. Milwaukee GM Matt Arnold said that Pena “overheated” and is doing better.
Peña, a 2024 international signee from the Dominican Republic, has been one of the brightest stars in the Brewers’ farm system. He won the Dominican Summer League batting title with a .393 average in his professional debut and has carried that momentum into 2026. In limited action at High-A Wisconsin this season, the 5-foot-11, 185-pound infielder was slashing a scorching .500/.593/.650 with his first home run of the year coming just days earlier on April 18. His rapid ascent has many projecting him as a potential impact player for Milwaukee in the near future.
