Cox shared the inspiration behind the track in his own words:

“I wrote this song from a memory early in my relationship with my wife when we were doing long distance. We finally got a few days together, and right when it was time to say goodbye again… the sky absolutely poured. Instead of running, we just stood there in the rain holding onto each other while everything around us felt chaotic. Somehow that moment stuck with me and turned into this song. I’m really glad we made it through that storm and I think you’ll hear that feeling in every second of ‘If There’s Rain’.”

That real-life moment—two people choosing connection over shelter—becomes the emotional core of the song. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of a love that refuses to flinch when dark clouds roll in:

“We’ve seen good times and we’ve seen bad We’ve had some dark clouds no doubt about that But you and me are undefeated There ain’t no secret, it’s easy as breathing So don’t you worry, don’t you worry about a thing

‘Cause if there’s rain you know I’ll dance with you There’s nothing that I wouldn’t do for you And if the sky started falling down Don’t be scared just let me be your roof The world could be shaking all around But as long as we keep our feet on the ground If there’s rain you know I’ll dance with you, I’ll dance with you”

The chorus lands like a promise set to a mid-tempo groove (4/4 time at 114 BPM), turning vulnerability into something celebratory. Lines like “Just put your hand in mine and follow my lead / We’re in 4/4 time and the tempo’s 114 / No matter what the storm may bring / As it’s rolling in, let me count you in, 1, 2, 3” feel like an invitation to the dance floor of life—rain or shine.

Canaan Cox, born November 20, 1989, in Henderson, North Carolina, grew up immersed in music. His father spun Conway Twitty records, his mother toured the Southeast with her band, and his seven sisters introduced him to pop hits that still shape his sound today. A BFA in Musical Theatre from Catawba College equipped him with performance chops that make his live shows electric—he’s as comfortable acting and dancing as he is behind the mic.

After college gigs at theme parks and on cruise ships, Cox moved to Nashville in 2016 to chase the dream full-time. He’s built a loyal following as an independent artist (no major label backing), releasing heartfelt singles like “As You Leave,” “Out Alive,” and others that have landed on major Spotify playlists. His fans, affectionately known as #CanaanitesForLife, love his authenticity and the way his songs feel like conversations over coffee.

“If There’s Rain” continues that tradition. It’s not just another breakup or love song—it’s a celebration of the kind of partnership that survives long-distance heartache, life’s chaos, and every unexpected downpour. Cox has said the memory of standing in that rain with his wife (after years of transatlantic separation) became the spark. That realness radiates through every note.

In an era where country music often explores heartbreak or small-town nostalgia, Cox offers something refreshingly hopeful: a reminder that the best love stories aren’t perfect—they’re the ones where you choose each other anyway. “If There’s Rain” feels like the soundtrack to every couple who’s weathered financial stress, distance, health scares, or just a bad day—and come out stronger on the other side.

Whether you’re streaming it for the first time today or already have it on repeat, one thing is clear: Canaan Cox has delivered a song that sticks with you the way that rainy goodbye stuck with him. It’s the kind of track that makes you want to grab your person, crank up the volume, and dance—no umbrella required.
