Eric Dane, the charismatic actor best known for his breakout role as Dr. Mark Sloan — affectionately nicknamed “McSteamy” — on the long-running medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, has died at the age of 53. His family confirmed the news otoday, following a courageous but ultimately losing battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Dane’s death marks a heartbreaking end to a public and rapid progression of the neurodegenerative condition. He first announced his ALS diagnosis in an exclusive statement to People magazine on April 10, 2025. At the time, he shared, “I have been diagnosed with ALS. I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter.” Symptoms had reportedly begun as early as 2024, but the public revelation came in spring 2025. By June of that year, Dane openly discussed the disease’s toll in interviews, including an emotional appearance on Good Morning America where he revealed he had lost the use of his right arm and was down to “one functioning arm.” His voice and mobility continued to deteriorate in the months that followed, as documented in public appearances and advocacy events.

Despite the challenges, Dane remained determined to use his platform for good. He became a passionate advocate for ALS awareness and research, participating in virtual panels (such as one for I Am ALS on Giving Tuesday) and continuing to work when possible, including a role on the series Brilliant Minds where he portrayed a character also living with ALS. Friends and colleagues rallied around him; reports even noted that actor Johnny Depp provided supportive housing arrangements during his illness.

Born Eric William Dane on November 9, 1972, in San Francisco, California, Dane began his acting career in the early 1990s with guest spots on television shows. He gained early recognition for roles in series like Charmed (as Jason Dean) and later starred as Navy captain Tom Chandler in The Last Ship. However, it was his 2006 introduction as the charming, confident plastic surgeon Mark Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy that catapulted him to stardom. The character — and the nickname “McSteamy” coined by fans and the show’s interns — became a cultural phenomenon, blending humor, heartbreak, and charisma across eight seasons. Dane’s chemistry with co-stars like Ellen Pompeo, Sandra Oh, and especially Katherine Heigl (as Izzie Stevens) helped define some of the series’ most memorable storylines.

In more recent years, Dane delivered a powerful performance as Cal Jacobs, the troubled father in HBO’s Euphoria, showcasing his range in a darker, more intense role.

A family statement shared with People reflected on his final days: “With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS. He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.” The statement highlighted his advocacy work and gratitude for fan support, while requesting privacy during this time.

Dane is survived by his wife, actress Rebecca Gayheart (whom he married in 2004), and their daughters. His legacy endures through iconic performances that brought levity, depth, and humanity to the screen — and through the awareness he helped raise for a disease that remains without a cure.

The entertainment world and ALS community mourn the loss of a talented actor and a resilient fighter.
