In a poignant announcement that has left fans both heartbroken and grateful, Ohio-based singer-songwriter JD Eicher released his latest—and final—album, The Finding, on February 11, 2026. This 13-track collection not only caps off two decades of heartfelt indie folk-rock but also signals Eicher’s decision to close the chapter on his career as a performing artist. As he steps away from the spotlight, Eicher leaves behind a legacy of introspective lyrics, melodic storytelling, and a deep connection with listeners who have followed his evolution from college band beginnings to literary-inspired soundtracks.

Born on July 27, 1986, in Youngstown, Ohio, JD Eicher discovered his passion for music early. He picked up the guitar at age 12 and penned his first song during high school at Canfield High School. After earning a Bachelor of Science in music and business from Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania, Eicher formed JD Eicher & the Goodnights while still in school. Influenced by icons like Jackson Browne, The Beatles, and Death Cab for Cutie, his sound blends acoustic introspection with indie rock energy.

Eicher’s career took off with extensive U.S. tours, occasional European gigs, and festival appearances. He opened for major acts including the Dave Matthews Band, Coldplay, and Maroon 5, building a loyal following through grassroots efforts. Highlights include founding JD’s Summer Songfest in Youngstown in 2017, which benefits local charities, and performing on the Rock Boat cruise. His music has appeared in national ad campaigns for brands like Virgin America and Olive Garden, as well as TV shows such as MTV’s Are You the One?. In a unique crossover, Eicher collaborated with bestselling author Nicholas Sparks, providing a soundtrack for the novel Two by Two and joining Sparks on a 2016 bookstore tour.

Over the years, Eicher released a robust discography, often under the band name before transitioning to solo billing. Key albums include the thematic trilogy: The Shape of Things (2009), Shifting (2011, with a deluxe edition in 2012), and Into Place (2013), exploring life’s cycles, change, and maturity. Later works like The Middle Distance (2016), The Two by Two Collection (2017), A Collection vinyl (2018), The Compass EP (2019), Court Street (2020), The Patreon Tapes (2021), and Majesto Sessions (2022)—which accompanied his debut novel The Lights Along Majesto—showcased his growth as a multifaceted creator. A live EP in 2015 captured his dynamic stage presence.

Eicher’s journey wasn’t without challenges. Despite lacking mainstream “gatekeeper blessing,” he sustained a living through fan support, touring with longtime bandmates Jim Merhaut on bass and Dylan Kollat on drums/percussion. His 20-year milestone, celebrated in anniversary shows in late 2025, reflected on this evolution, starting solo acoustic and building to full band performances.

Released on all streaming platforms, The Finding is a 38-minute, 13-song opus that distills Eicher’s signature style—poignant, reflective folk-rock with themes of self-discovery, resilience, and closure. The tracklist includes:

  1. The Song (3:00)
  2. Where We’re Going (3:30)
  3. Adelaide (3:18)
  4. Groundhog Day (Hey) (2:08)
  5. Nobody Gets It Wrong Like I Do (2:29)
  6. The Will To Live (2:44)
  7. Somewhere in a Place Like This (3:28)
  8. Kind to You (2:48)
  9. Arrow in the Breeze (2:52)
  10. Good is Gonna Come Along Too (3:16)
  11. Wild Heart (3:28)
  12. Blue Water (3:22)
  13. Flight (an outro) (2:01)

Tracks like “Adelaide” and “Wild Heart” evoke personal growth and adventure, while the outro “Flight” feels like a metaphorical send-off. Eicher has described the album as completing a musical course he began years ago, allowing him to say more than he ever hoped while growing as both a musician and a person.

In an emotional Instagram post accompanying the release, Eicher explained his decision to end his “artist project” with The Finding. “For me, it’s honestly a strange time, as this release is also a sort of farewell,” he wrote. Reflecting on 20 years of music-making, he expressed gratitude for the connections formed and the support that sustained him despite indie hurdles. “What a gift it’s been to share them and know they’ve connected with some of you,” he added, acknowledging fans’ role in his journey.

Eicher emphasized that while there’s “always more to say and more art to make,” it felt right to conclude here. He hinted at future storytelling, perhaps through his writing endeavors—like his 2022 novel— or family life, noting he’ll share tales of his travels and collaborations with his children and grandchildren. “It has been an honor to do it, you kept me going, and I love you. Thank you. Long live the song.”

Though Eicher hasn’t detailed specific next steps, his history as a novelist and involvement in charity events suggests a shift toward creative writing, community work, or even commercial ventures (he’s notably appeared in Speedway ads). For fans, The Finding serves as a bittersweet culmination, inviting reflection on themes of endings and new beginnings.

As Eicher bows out, his music endures—a testament to independent artistry’s power. Stream The Finding today and join in celebrating a career that found its way into countless hearts.
