In a thrilling development for horror fans, Warner Bros. has announced that acclaimed director Mike Flanagan will write and direct a fresh film adaptation of Stephen King’s iconic novella The Mist.

This marks another collaboration between Flanagan and the master of horror, following successful projects like Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep. The news broke exclusively via Deadline, highlighting Flanagan’s role not only as writer and director but also as producer through his Red Room banner, alongside Tyler Thompson, and Spyglass’ Gary Barber and Chris Stone.

Published in 1980 as part of King’s collection Skeleton Crew, The Mist tells the chilling tale of a small town in Maine engulfed by an unnatural fog that conceals monstrous creatures from another dimension.

The story centers on a group of survivors trapped in a supermarket, where the real horror emerges not just from the external threats but from the breakdown of human society inside. King’s novella blends Lovecraftian cosmic horror with sharp social commentary on fear, faith, and mob mentality, making it ripe for reinterpretation.

This isn’t the first time The Mist has been brought to the screen. Frank Darabont’s 2007 film adaptation, starring Thomas Jane and Marcia Gay Harden, remains a fan favorite for its tense atmosphere and infamous gut-punch ending—a deviation from the book that King himself praised. A short-lived TV series followed in 2017, expanding the universe but failing to capture the same critical acclaim. Now, with Flanagan at the helm, expectations are high for a version that delves deeper into the psychological depths that have become his signature.

Flanagan, known for his emotionally resonant horror in Netflix series like The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass, has a proven track record with King’s material.

His adaptation of Doctor Sleep (2019) skillfully bridged King’s novel with Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, earning praise for balancing scares with character-driven drama. More recently, Flanagan directed The Life of Chuck, another King story, and is set to helm a TV series remake of Carrie for Prime Video. He’s also attached to a long-gestating adaptation of King’s epic The Dark Tower series and is currently working on a new Exorcist film for Universal.

The announcement has sparked a mix of excitement and curiosity on social media. Fans on X (formerly Twitter) are buzzing about Flanagan’s potential to elevate the story’s themes. One user enthused, “Mike Flanagan doing The Mist after Clayface, The Exorcist & a Carrie series has me excited! The Mist is one of my favorite Stephen King books & movies! So excited to see his designs for the creatures hiding in The Mist!” Another noted, “Mike Flanagan tackling The Mist sounds like a perfect match of psychological horror and emotional storytelling.” However, some expressed surprise at remaking a story already well-adapted, with comments like, “I love Mike Flanagan’s work… But I’m pretty surprised that he wants to make a new movie version of The Mist after Darabont’s.” and “Honestly love Mike Flanagan but really annoyed with the fact out of every Stephen King adaptation he chose to redo The Mist.”

As Flanagan continues to cement his status as one of today’s premier horror auteurs, this project promises to bring a fresh layer of dread to King’s timeless tale. While no release date or casting details have been announced yet, the reunion of these creative forces is sure to generate anticipation among genre enthusiasts.
