St. Louis City SC is set to bolster its front office with the addition of Ally Mackay as assistant sporting director, according to multiple reports from reliable MLS sources. This move brings a seasoned executive with a proven track record in Major League Soccer to join the staff led by sporting director Corey Wray.

Mackay, a Scottish football executive, most recently served as the general manager and chief soccer officer (CSO) at D.C. United. He joined D.C. United in late 2023, overseeing all soccer operations, including player identification, recruitment, acquisition, and roster management during his tenure. His time in Washington ended in September 2025 when the club announced his departure, paving the way for this new opportunity in St. Louis.

Before his role at D.C. United, Mackay was a key figure in Nashville SC’s front office, joining the club in 2019 ahead of their expansion season. As assistant general manager (and later in elevated capacities), he helped lay the groundwork for one of MLS’s most impressive early successes. Nashville quickly established a competitive identity, building a strong foundation through smart recruitment, tactical discipline, and roster construction that led to playoff appearances and consistent performance in a short time frame. His contributions were instrumental in turning an expansion side into a playoff contender rapidly, showcasing his expertise in building sustainable, high-performing teams.

Mackay’s background also includes earlier experience as a player agent for about a decade, giving him deep insights into player negotiations, contracts, and market dynamics across the soccer world. Combined with his MLS front-office roles, this makes him a versatile addition capable of supporting strategic decisions in scouting, transfers, and long-term planning.

The appointment places Mackay under Corey Wray, who was named St. Louis City SC’s sporting director in November 2025. Wray, with over 20 years of MLS experience—including stints at Toronto FC, Columbus Crew, and CF Montréal—has been tasked with revamping the club’s roster strategy, scouting, and overall sporting operations following a transitional period for the young franchise. After a historic debut season in 2023 that saw St. Louis top the Western Conference early on, the club has sought to stabilize and elevate its competitiveness amid changes in leadership and performance.

This hiring signals St. Louis City SC’s continued commitment to strengthening its technical staff with experienced MLS builders. Mackay’s blend of expansion expertise from Nashville and high-level GM experience from D.C. United aligns well with Wray’s vision of creating a data-driven, sustainable pathway for success—integrating academy talent, targeted recruitment, and a winning culture.

While the club has not yet issued an official announcement, the move represents a significant upgrade in depth for St. Louis’s sporting department as they aim to rebound and contend in the highly competitive Western Conference.
