The Chicago Cubs have agreed to terms with three-time All-Star third baseman Alex Bregman on a 5-year, $175 million contract, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. The deal, averaging $35 million per year, brings a proven power bat, elite defense, and postseason experience to Wrigley Field.

Bregman, now 31 (turning 32 in March), opted out of his prior contract with the Red Sox after a strong 2025 season (.273/.360/.462, 18 HR in 114 games). The Cubs outbid several competitors—including Boston, Toronto, Arizona, and Detroit—to secure the veteran leader.

This signing directly addresses Chicago’s need for middle-of-the-order production following the departure of Kyle Tucker and the trade of prospect Owen Caissie. Bregman upgrades third base, provides Gold Glove-caliber defense, excellent plate discipline, and championship pedigree (two World Series titles with Houston), while adding valuable leadership to the clubhouse.
