The St. Louis Blues announced that they have signed defenseman Philip Broberg to a six-year contract extension worth $48 million, carrying an average annual value (AAV) of $8 million. The deal, announced by President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Doug Armstrong, secures Broberg’s services through the 2031-32 season and comes as the 24-year-old was set to become a restricted free agent this summer.

St. Louis Blues on X (formerly Twitter): “Doug Armstrong on signing Philip Broberg to a six-year extension: “It’s exciting to have him here for this year, plus six more. That takes him right through the meat of his prime years… He’s a player, I think, on the backend that we can build around.” #stlblues / X”

Broberg, a towering 6-foot-4, 210-pound blueliner, joined the Blues in August 2024 as a restricted free agent after the team signed him to an offer sheet that the Edmonton Oilers did not match. This bold acquisition—part of a notable double dip that also brought in forward Dylan Holloway—has quickly paid dividends. In his second season with St. Louis, Broberg has been a model of consistency, appearing in all 45 games so far in 2025-26, contributing 14 points (two goals, 12 assists), six penalty minutes, and heavy minutes on the top pairing alongside veteran Colton Parayko. He leads the team in average ice time per game at around 23:18, showcasing his reliability as a shutdown defender with strong puck-moving ability.

The previous season proved to be a breakout for Broberg, where he set career highs with 29 points (eight goals, 21 assists) in 68 regular-season games while leading all Blues defensemen with a stellar +21 rating. Across his NHL career to date, which spans 194 regular-season games split between the Oilers and Blues, Broberg has tallied 56 points (12 goals, 44 assists), 32 penalty minutes, and a +16 plus-minus rating.

His postseason experience adds further value: Broberg played 27 career playoff games, including a key role in the Oilers’ run to the 2024 Stanley Cup Final, where he contributed five points (three goals, two assists) in 17 games.

Originally selected eighth overall by the Edmonton Oilers in the 2019 NHL Draft, Broberg has evolved from a highly touted prospect into a dependable two-way force. His size, skating speed, and defensive instincts have made him a cornerstone of the Blues’ blue line as they build toward sustained contention.

Adding to the excitement surrounding Broberg’s future, the Örebro, Sweden native was recently named to Team Sweden’s roster for the upcoming Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026. This selection marks a significant international honor and underscores his growing reputation among elite competition—especially notable given Sweden’s deep pool of NHL defensemen.

The contract represents excellent value for the Blues, locking in a player entering his prime at a cap hit that remains reasonable amid rising league salaries. At just 31 years old when the deal expires, Broberg will be positioned for another big contract down the road while providing stability and leadership on the back end.

This extension signals the Blues’ commitment to retaining young talent and building around a strong defensive foundation. For fans in St. Louis, it’s a clear sign of optimism: Philip Broberg is here to stay, and the team’s blue line looks brighter—and more secure—for years to come.

Jeremy Rutherford on X (formerly Twitter): “Army on Broberg: “It’s exciting to have him for this year, plus 6 more. It basically takes him to the meat of his prime years. He’s been one of the few bright lights in a season that hasn’t gone anywhere near the way we expected. He’s a player on the backend we can build around.” / X”

Jeremy Rutherford on X (formerly Twitter): “I spoke with Broberg’s agent, Darren Ferris. Their camp was looking at a 4-year deal and the Blues wanted at 8, so they settled on 6. Broberg had no intention to take this to arbitration and delay for a year or two to make more as a UFA. #stlblues / X”
