After more than four decades, the curtains are rising once again on the iconic Muppet Theatre. Disney has announced that The Muppet Show is making a triumphant comeback—not as a full series revival (yet), but as a highly anticipated one-off special event premiering on February 4, 2026, simultaneously on Disney+ and ABC. This date perfectly aligns with the 50th anniversary of the beloved variety show’s original debut in 1976.

Created by the legendary Jim Henson, the original The Muppet Show ran for five seasons from 1976 to 1981, captivating audiences worldwide with its blend of chaotic comedy, musical numbers, celebrity guests, and the irrepressible charm of Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Gonzo, and the rest of the felt-filled ensemble. The series won multiple Emmys, a Grammy, a Peabody, and BAFTA awards, and was once hailed by Time magazine as “the most popular television entertainment now being produced on Earth.” All five classic seasons are currently streaming on Disney+ for fans to revisit the magic.

The 2026 special faithfully recreates the original variety show format: Kermit and the gang dust off the old Muppet Theatre stage to put on a night of music, sketches, and mayhem. Teasers released in late 2025 and early 2026 show Kermit flipping on the lights in the darkened theater, declaring, “It’s the return of The Muppet Show—back on the very stage where it all started, and then ended, and is maybe starting again, depending on how tonight goes.”

Leading the human talent is pop sensation Sabrina Carpenter as the very special guest star. A longtime Muppets fan (she even playfully “arrested” Miss Piggy during one of her concerts), Carpenter brings her chart-topping energy to the chaos. Executive producer and comedian Seth Rogen also makes an appearance, adding his signature humor to the proceedings.

Behind the scenes, the project is a collaboration between The Muppets Studio, Point Grey Pictures (Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s company), 20th Television, and Disney Branded Television. Veteran puppeteers—including Bill Barretta, Dave Goelz (an original performer who voiced Gonzo and Dr. Bunsen Honeydew), Eric Jacobson, Peter Linz, David Rudman, and Matt Vogel—return to bring the characters to life, ensuring the heartfelt puppetry that defined the original remains intact.

While officially a standalone event, insiders and teasers hint that this special serves as a backdoor pilot. Strong viewership could pave the way for a full series revival, much like past Muppets projects have tested the waters. Fans have long clamored for a return to the classic variety format after mixed results from modern takes like the 2015 sitcom-style The Muppets or the band-focused Muppets Mayhem.

In an era of reboots and nostalgia, this special feels like a loving nod to the past while injecting fresh energy. As Kermit might say, “Hi-ho!”—it’s time to get things started again.

Mark your calendars for February 4, 2026, and prepare for wocka-wocka jokes, explosive sketches, and plenty of heartfelt moments. Whether it sparks a new era for the Muppets or stands as a glorious one-night reunion, this is muppetational news for generations of fans. Why don’t we get things started?
