As a lifelong fan of Stephen King’s work and someone who liked the It films, I approached Welcome to Derry with decent but not too high expectations—and it absolutely delivered.
This HBO prequel series dives deep into the cursed history of Derry, Maine, in 1962, expanding the mythology in ways that feel authentic to King’s universe while standing strong on its own.
Bill Skarsgård reprises his iconic role as Pennywise with even more chilling menace, making every appearance a heart-pounding highlight. The young cast is phenomenal, bringing raw emotion and vulnerability to a new group of kids facing unimaginable horrors. The adult performances, including standout turns exploring themes of racism, trauma, and community corruption, add layers of depth that elevate the story beyond mere scares.
The atmosphere is dripping with dread—foggy streets, eerie sewers, and that unmistakable sense of something ancient and evil lurking beneath the surface. Director Andy Muschietti’s vision shines through in stunning visuals, practical effects, and sequences that had me on the edge of my seat. It’s a masterful blend of psychological horror, supernatural terror, and heartfelt coming-of-age drama.
What excites me most is the future: Seasons 2 and 3 have been greenlit, with each taking place 27 years further into the past—delving into the darker cycles of Pennywise’s influence in 1935 and 1908. This backward timeline promises to uncover even more origins and secrets, building toward an epic expansion of the It lore.
If you love horror that lingers long after the credits roll, Welcome to Derry is essential viewing. Float on over to HBO Max and binge it now—you won’t regret it (though you might sleep with the lights on)!
