Anthony Geary, the legendary actor best known for his portrayal of the charismatic anti-hero Luke Spencer on ABC’s General Hospital, has died at the age of 78. Geary passed away on December 14, 2025, in Amsterdam, Netherlands, due to complications following a planned medical procedure.

Geary’s death was confirmed by his husband, Claudio Gama, who described it as a shock to family and friends. The actor had retired to Amsterdam in 2015 after leaving the show, where he lived privately with Gama, whom he married in 2019.

Born Tony Dean Geary on May 29, 1947, in Coalville, Utah, Geary began his acting journey in theater before transitioning to television. He appeared in primetime shows like All in the Family and soaps such as The Young and the Restless before landing the role that would make him a household name.

In 1978, Geary joined General Hospital as Luke Spencer, a street-smart hustler with a dark edge. Initially intended as a short-term character, Luke’s chemistry with Genie Francis’s Laura Webber turned him into a daytime icon. Their controversial storyline—beginning with Luke’s assault on Laura—evolved into one of television’s most famous romances, the supercouple “Luke and Laura.”

The pinnacle came in 1981 with Luke and Laura’s on-screen wedding, watched by an astonishing 30 million viewers—the highest-rated episode in soap opera history. The event featured a guest appearance by Elizabeth Taylor and cemented Geary’s status as a soap superstar.

Geary portrayed Luke on and off for nearly four decades, appearing in nearly 2,000 episodes until his retirement in 2015 (with a brief cameo in 2017). His nuanced performance earned him a record eight Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, more than any other male performer in daytime television.

The news prompted heartfelt tributes from the General Hospital family. Co-star Genie Francis, who played Laura, said: “No star burned brighter than Tony Geary. He was one of a kind… I am crushed, I will miss him terribly, but I was so lucky to be his partner.”

Executive producer Frank Valentini stated: “The entire General Hospital family is heartbroken… Tony was a brilliant actor and set the bar that we continue to strive for. His legacy, and that of Luke Spencer’s, will live on.”

ABC echoed the sentiment: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Anthony Geary, whose portrayal of Luke Spencer helped define General Hospital and daytime television.”

Geary’s impact extended beyond soaps; he appeared in films like UHF and stage productions, but Luke Spencer remained his enduring legacy—a complex character who captivated audiences for generations.

Anthony Geary’s contributions to television transformed daytime drama and created moments that remain etched in pop culture history. He is survived by his husband, Claudio Gama, and extended family. Rest in peace.
