AMC Networks is in the early stages of developing a television series based on the beloved 1991 action thriller Point Break. The project, which landed at AMC after a highly competitive bidding process, promises to expand the adrenaline-fueled universe created by director Kathryn Bigelow.
Unlike a direct remake, this series is positioned as a continuation set in the same world as the original film—but with entirely new characters. The story unfolds 35 years after the events of the 1991 movie, placing it in 2026. It centers on a new dangerous heist crew that has intriguing ties to the infamous Ex-Presidents gang, the bank-robbing surfers who donned masks of former U.S. presidents in the classic.
The original Point Break followed rookie FBI agent Johnny Utah (Keanu Reeves) as he went undercover in the Southern California surf scene to catch Bodhi (Patrick Swayze) and his crew of bank robbers, who funded their extreme lifestyle through high-stakes heists. The film became a cult classic for its blend of philosophical undertones, breathtaking action, and unforgettable chemistry between its leads.
The series is being penned by David Kalstein, known for his work on Amazon’s Butterfly and Treadstone. Kalstein will also executive produce alongside Alcon Television Group’s Andrew Kosove, Broderick Johnson, and Ben Roberts. The project is a collaboration between Alcon Television Group and AMC Studios.
AMC’s recent success with adaptations of ’90s-era properties, such as the critically acclaimed Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire (which is heading into its third season), likely played a role in securing this high-profile development.
This isn’t the first revival of Point Break. A 2015 feature film remake, directed by Ericson Core and starring Luke Bracey as Utah and Édgar Ramírez as Bodhi, shifted the focus to global extreme sports but failed to capture the original’s magic, earning poor reviews and underwhelming box office returns.
By contrast, the TV format could allow for deeper exploration of the surf-and-crime world, evolving it for a modern audience while honoring the Ex-Presidents legacy. Fans are already buzzing about potential updates to the iconic presidential masks and how surfing culture has changed over the decades.
Will this series recapture the ultimate rush? Only time—and the next big swell—will tell.
