Alan Ritchson Confirms DCU Talks: A “Messier” Role Awaits in James Gunn’s Universe

Reacher star Alan Ritchson has confirmed he’s deep in conversations with DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn about joining the DC Universe (DCU). But don’t expect another squeaky-clean hero from the actor who’s become synonymous with rugged, no-nonsense action. Ritchson is gunning for something far more chaotic—a “messier” character that could flip the script on traditional caped crusaders.

The news dropped during a promotional interview for Ritchson’s upcoming Prime Video action-comedy Playdate, set to stream on November 12. Speaking with ScreenRant, the 42-year-old actor didn’t mince words when pressed on his superhero aspirations. “Yeah,” Ritchson admitted when asked about potential DCU involvement. “That’s the conversation that I’ve been having with them is like, ‘I want to play somebody a little messier.'” He elaborated that he’s pitched a specific personality type to the studio—one that promises to inject some grit and moral ambiguity into Gunn’s burgeoning cinematic shared universe.

This isn’t Ritchson’s first dance with DC lore. Fans of a certain vintage, like myself, will remember him as the brooding Arthur “A.C.” Curry (Aquaman) in Smallville‘s later seasons, where he brought a brooding intensity to the underwater king long before Jason Momoa made the role a blockbuster staple. More recently, he suited up as Hank Hall/Hawk in HBO Max’s Titans, trading punches with Teen Titans foes while grappling with his own inner demons. Those roles showcased Ritchson’s knack for layered heroes, but after skyrocketing to fame as the towering Jack Reacher in Amazon’s hit series—where he dispenses justice with fists and few words—he’s craving complexity over capes.

Gunn and co-CEO Peter Safran’s “Chapter One: Gods and Monsters” is ramping up, with Supergirl eyeing a June 26, 2026, release and the Clayface-centric film following in September. HBO’s Lanterns series, a gritty Green Lantern procedural, is slated for an early 2026 premiere, potentially opening the door for Ritchson’s “messier” vibe in a TV format before a big-screen leap. Gunn himself has been vocal about his admiration for Ritchson, telling the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast back in July 2024: “I am a big Alan Ritchson fan, both as an actor and as a guy. Let’s just wait to see what happens.” That mutual respect seems to have blossomed into real talks, fueling speculation that’s dominated social media and comic forums since the interview aired.

Of course, no DCU casting rumor mill would be complete without Batman chatter. Ritchson has been a perennial fan-favorite for Bruce Wayne, his 6’2″ frame and brooding charisma making him a natural fit for the Dark Knight. The buzz peaked earlier this year when fancasts flooded Reddit and Twitter, with some even joking he’d play the role for free. But in an August 2025 Variety sit-down, Ritchson poured cold water on the idea. “Words have been exchanged about Batman,” he said. “But I strongly don’t think that Batman is in my future. I do think there is something in my future with DC. And I would like that to remain true.” Gunn’s vision for The Brave and the Bold—a father-daughter tale emphasizing Batman’s “f—ing maniac” edge—might lean messy, but Ritchson seems destined for uncharted territory.

So, if not the Caped Crusader, who? Ritchson’s hints point to an anti-hero or outright villain—someone “dirtier” than the polished protagonists he’s played before. Green Arrow, the hot-headed archer with a social justice streak, has been floated as a perfect match, especially after Ritchson’s comments convinced one ScreenRant writer he’s “an even better casting” for Oliver Queen than Batman. Whatever the role, Ritchson emphasized it’s about adding fresh dynamics: “I described to them the kind of personality that I’d want to play and what that would mean to their world, and I think it’s something everybody wants to see right now over there.”

As Playdate—a high-stakes comedy where Ritchson plays a dad roped into suburban espionage alongside Kevin James and Isla Fisher—hits screens, the question on every fan’s mind is: When will we see him trade Reacher’s trench coat for a DC cowl (or lack thereof)? Ritchson isn’t spilling more beans yet, but his enthusiasm is infectious. “If I’m going to do this,” he told ScreenRant, “I want it to count.”
