In a heartbreaking announcement, the Dallas Cowboys confirmed the tragic passing of their defensive end, Marshawn Kneeland, on Thursday, November 6, 2025. The 24-year-old, in just his second season with the team, left an indelible mark both on and off the field. The Cowboys organization expressed their profound grief in a statement: “It is with extreme sadness that the Dallas Cowboys share that Marshawn Kneeland tragically passed away this morning. Marshawn was a beloved teammate and member of our organization. Our thoughts and prayers regarding Marshawn are with his girlfriend Catalina and his family.”

Kneeland, a native of Grand Rapids, Michigan, was a second-round pick (No. 56 overall) by the Cowboys in the 2024 NFL Draft out of Western Michigan University. A standout at Godwin Heights High School, where he excelled as a two-way player at linebacker and tight end, Kneeland went on to shine for the Western Michigan Broncos. During his college career from 2019 to 2023, he amassed 149 tackles and 12.5 sacks, earning second-team All-Mid-American Conference honors in 2023 with 57 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, and 4.5 sacks.

In his brief but promising NFL tenure, Kneeland appeared in 18 games over nearly two seasons, starting four, and recorded 26 tackles, five tackles for loss, and one sack. His versatility and high motor drew comparisons to former Cowboys defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence, with the team seeing him as a potential cornerstone of their defensive line. Despite a knee injury that sidelined him for six games in his rookie year, Kneeland showed resilience, returning stronger in 2025 and making significant contributions in training camp and games.

Just days before his passing, Kneeland etched his name in Cowboys history with his first career touchdown during a Monday Night Football game against the Arizona Cardinals on November 3, 2025. In a pivotal special teams play, teammate Sam Williams blocked a punt, and Kneeland chased down the loose ball in the end zone, securing a touchdown that sparked a brief rally in the Cowboys’ 27-17 loss. The score, the first blocked punt touchdown for Dallas since 2021, showcased Kneeland’s hustle and determination, qualities that defined his young career.

Kneeland’s impact extended beyond statistics. In interviews, he spoke of his growth from his rookie to second year, crediting his late mother’s influence and his ability to adapt to the NFL’s demands. His standout performances in training camp, including an interception of Dak Prescott and consistent pass-rushing prowess, signaled a bright future. Teammates and coaches praised his competitive spirit, noting his leadership in a talented defensive end room that included Micah Parsons and Sam Williams.

As the Cowboys head into their bye week with a 3-5-1 record, the loss of Kneeland casts a somber shadow over the organization. The team, already navigating a challenging season marked by injuries and roster changes, now faces the emotional weight of losing a beloved teammate.
