Former Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron, a three-time national champion, announced Thursday his run for lieutenant governor as a “conservative outsider.” The 34-year-old Mobile native, who played six NFL seasons before retiring, shared the news in a two-minute YouTube video blending championship highlights with family images.
“My roots run deep in Alabama, and with my football career behind me, Katherine and I are raising our three boys here, instilling in them our deep Christian faith and teaching them the fundamental morals that make this state so special,” McCarron said. He pledged to defend “faith, family, and football” against cultural threats, citing his 2016 Trump endorsement.
The bid targets the 2026 Republican primary, vacated by term-limited Lt. Gov. Will Ainsworth. McCarron joins a field featuring ex-athletes like gubernatorial hopeful Sen. Tommy Tuberville. A key motivator: the recent shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
“Alabama’s conservative and cultural values are under attack from every direction,” McCarron declared. “That’s why Charlie Kirk’s shooting affected so many of us so deeply. His example convinced me to get off the sidelines and get into the game and stand tall for our conservative beliefs.”

Alabama’s all-time leading college passer (9,000+ yards, 77 TDs), McCarron embraced his inexperience: “I’m not a politician. I’m an outsider who knows what it takes to win.” Priorities include economic growth, education, and gun rights.
Reactions poured in from sports and conservative circles. Barstool Sports joked Alabama now “requires all offices to be held by former collegiate athletics figures.” X users cheered, with one saying, “If I lived in Alabama, I would definitely vote for AJ McCarron for lieutenant governor.” The launch post racked up hundreds of engagements.
